According to other sources the Principal, a woman who apparently has no clue about sports sent him a 2 line email informing him she was firing him.

 

A 2 line email to a coach who averaged 8 wins a year at HC and went to 2 semi finals there and has coached for years.

 

People have said she gave in to a few upset parents who's kids didn't play.

I hate this for Coach Larkey and for the kids in the Harlan County program. He is one of the old guard who deserves much better than being fired by email. What a cowardly way to handle things.

 

I have always had tremendous respect for Coach Larkey and his coaching record speaks for itself. I've never heard anyone say a cross word about him.

 

I hope if he still desires to coach, that he finds a job where he will be happy and prosperous.

Yeah and Tom Larkey is still responsible for Highlands worst playoff blowout loss in recent memory when he was at Rockcastle Co. I believe the year was 2002. The Dude can coach! Harlan Co's loss for sure.....Good luck Coach Larkey.

Larkey is one of the good guys. A leader and mentor of young men with a long standing tradition and moral compass. Yes, the economic dynamic in EKY influences school gate. But from an 8-4 season in 2013 to an injury riddled 2-9 in 2014 doesn't warrant a two line email dismissal.

 

More attention should be placed on the super and principal. My guess is their choice for replacement will shed light on whatever politics are involved. Bad news for the Bears in every sense of the word. Coach Larkey deserves to go out and retire on his terms, not those of a misguided, ignorant, minority!

I played for Tom Larkey. He had more influence on my life than my own dad. Hes a good person and a great HS football coach.

I was surprised when he made the move to Harlan County. Nothing against HC, but he had a lot of success at Rockcastle and my impression of the area was it was good community and place to live.

I hate to hear it. Coach Larkey made such a name for himself at the Rock (makes me miss Birdfan's cartoons) but I am sure he will land on his feet.

I wonder...what is the principal's record ? Test scores : Have they improved / declined / stayed the same?

I would hate to start a precedent as an educator with this. School/school sports is not professional business or sports. You don't pick your employees/ students or players.

Here is the question HC has to ask themselves...who are they going to get who was BETTER than Tom Larkey? I mean, that's why you let someone go right (other than morale/legal issues)...to replace them with someone who will do a better job.
