Congrats to the Colonels! Didn't know they had it in them but as they have done for a few years, they proved many wrong.

Kids and coordinators made this a fun night with some serious basketball. Drew does for sure have a nice golf swing.

NCC is tight as a drum when they play CovCath.

They opened the game tight taking quick rushed shots and not handling the ball very well.

NCC's bigs do not do a good job of posting or re-posting or simply screening away when there is denial. It is like they have self-created pressure and don't take the time on offense to feed it to McDonald.

Credit CovCath's guards for applying ball pressure, but NCC simply doesn't pound the ball to the post enough.

McDonald spends too much time on the key reversing the ball and not effectively diving to the post.

I think the loss of Pangallo limits them in the halfcourt taking away a potential driver to the basket and and effective post feeder.

CCH scraps and Theobald and Flood are solid players.

To me the turning point in the game was after the basket and one, plus the taunting, NCC missed 2 straight free throws and I don't think they scored on the ensuing possession.

They played catch up the rest of the way.

Bball fan either partying his butt off or working on a ten chapter novel summation of game.

Like Clyde said, "Hello Andy Flood" indeed.

 

We all knew that he could knock down 3's, but he showed us that he's SO MUCH MORE than that.

 

Exciting to see his dynamite coming out party on the big stage, and he can dream easy tonight knowing that his effort was more than key to the Colonel's victory.

 

No doubt in my mind that this will be a huge confidence boost for him, and that we've only seen the beginning of what he can do.

 

He can think the word "STARTER" now and know that he's without a doubt a lock for the job. He's the piece of the puzzle that the Colonels have been needing and his timing couldn't have been better.

 

I was WAY wrong about NewCath and what I expected to see from them. I wasn't surprised by what the Colonels brought, I was just super surprised that NewCath looked so much more inferior.

 

That big stage BOK monkey on their back is obviously still plaguing them, and I was having flashbacks of last season's 9th Region tourney appearance and how the jinx for them is still ever so present. I just know that they are so much more than what we saw in them, but sadly for them they just couldn't manage to show it.

 

The Colonels are so well conditioned, and I never once got the impression that they were tired. The same cannot be said about the Breds. The Colonels were feisty and relentless giving NewCath fits all night with solid swarming "D" and just wearing them down.

 

The plan for NCC to have all their mighty options in place to keep CovCath in trouble never came to be in the least.

 

Foul trouble with Weyer, and injury with Pangallo turned things stagnate for them leaving too much work for McDonald to try to handle, and his frustration was ever so clear that his typical helping hands were severely missing in action.

 

I have to give him credit for not letting his bubble burst because he did look to be right on the edge at times. He's bound to have claustrophobic nightmares over this tonight ruining any idea of getting a good night's sleep. Poor guy.

 

Just like last season, this Colonel bunch is an awesome TEAM. Their never say die attitude helps them find ways to win. They emphatically make the statement that they will not be denied. You might have other teams in the state boasting D1 candidates, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more exciting TEAM in the state, and ultimately that's what great high school ball is all about.

 

You can bore me all day long with nationally ranked teams with little to no spirit, and players looking ahead to the next level, but a TEAM like the Colonels are WINNERS, and it's hard not to embrace that, and get behind them.

 

Awesome night at the BOK with great basketball all around. The main event did not disappoint as it put an exclamation point on the whole evening. This event lived up to its billing and showed with so many hineys in the seats of the arena that the tradition of high school basketball is alive and well here in NKY, and that legendary games are not a thing of the past.

 

Great to see so many BGP's members in the house, and the chance to meet a few for the first time, namely AME1981, and also to finally meet lawildcat. You've got fun written all over your face.

 

And to think that this was just a warm up because we've got two more of these great nights of basketball on tap in the near future, and not to mention the ever exciting 9th Region Tournament.

 

From the time that the doors opened at 4:30 to the sounding of the final horn at 10:30 some might think we should all be worn from 6 hours but honestly the night seemed to fly by.

 

I haven't had enough so I'm gonna listen to the game all over again at CovCath Internet Radio. No doubt that it's going to be worth a listen to relive all that Colonel greatest of the evening once more.

Does NCC have any more games at BOKC prior to the 9th Region Tournament?

If these are the best Refs the 9th has to offer then I feel sorry for the region.

 

I still think NCC is better at the game, but Cov Cath is a million times better at the mind game, and that's what won it for them. Beat them up for the first half, smack talked the entire game (see #15's technical) and got in their heads. Still, at no point should NCC have had more fouls in that game.

 

NCC definitely shouldn't have won with how they played, but that doesn't excuse them getting beaten up at every turn and the refs let CCH get away with murder. If they don't establish a precedence from the start, they just beat the kids to death. Especially when Swallowed-My-Whistly Pouncey(sp?) is "officiating."

 

NCC needs to man up in their next meeting if they want a chance, they need to get physical themselves and show CCH that they're not afraid, and send some of the bullying back at them. It'll help when Zach gets his leg cramps sorted out, and Ben isn't in bogus foul trouble. Fix the absurd number of turnovers and I think NCC could win by 20 if they get it together and get past the mind game. Was also glad to see NCC handle the press much better in this game than the last time these teams matched up.

 

I still think NCC is a better basketball team, but until they learn to play the mind game they won't win against CCH. I like how CCH's coaches got their student section involved as much as they could. They kept turning to them and waving at them to get pumped up and start shouting.

 

Glad to see Eric Anderson show up for the Breds in the first half, dropping 3's and putting up 9pts.

I saw fatigue in the NCC team's big 3... especially Pangallo. His cramps (looked like both legs, as I saw him pulling on each foot) were a symptom of the bigger floor + having to run more due to the face guarding and double teams. CovCath again showed the rest of the coaches in NKY how to beat NCC... take Pangallo out of the game.

 

CovCath pressed at first and the went to a junk defense. They were face guarding Pangallo with Flood and the other 4 players were in a 1-3 zone. That zone would morph into a 1-2-1 diamond zone with Flood chasing Zack. When Zach would catch the ball CovCath would immediately send a double team. It was very effective. nCC's rythym was disrupted and Zack was frustrated.

 

Zack having to leave the game had everything to do with what CovCath was doing to him on the bigger floor.

 

Flood really stood out... congrats to him.

 

After 2 years of Ruthsatz showing other coaches the blueprint to beat NCC, will the other coaches pay attention and take heed?

 

My personal game scouting of CovCath:

- take away Cooper going right to the basket. Dare him to shoot outside shots or go left... you will be happy with the results

 

- lenhoff is ONLY going to shoot from the perimeter... he will not drive

 

- slack off Romes... he does not look to shoot... dare him to shoot a lot of shots over the course of the game

 

- play real good defense... as best you can, on CVH and Flood.

 

- dare Bo to shoot a lot of shots

 

I do agree that CovCath got away with a lot of "use of the hands on D"

....

Enjoyed seeing some great folks tonight: Bird Brain, Clyde, Randy Parker (and Little Ms RP), AME, B-Ball-Fan, LAWildcat, Walter, and Mexitucky. If you can find a better guy than Randy Parker, I'd like to see him. What a gentleman.

 

Spent some time with Beetle on the concourse....what an outstanding young man. 9th Region is going to miss him.

 

As Clyde and LawnBoy will attest, I'm a huge fan of Andy Flood and I'm thrilled for him. Not only did he score well, he did a great job on Zach before the cramp.

 

Cole was really solid, hit his foul shots, and has a great maturity to his game.

 

Nice offensive output from Cooper.

 

Happy for Noah to knockdown a 3 in the first half. As Clyde said, Grant Romes worked his tail off tonight. Great effort by him.

 

Hepp and Sweeney with some big minutes tonight and they provided some stability when Bo was saddled with foul issues and the injury.

 

Fun night tonight.

All anyone needs to know is the better TEAM won. Refs, big gym, mind games = excuses.

I was wondering the same thing. Theobold showed excitement after a huge bucket that he got fouled on. Unless he said something to the NCC player, I'm not really sure what it was for. Maybe the ref somehow viewed it as taunting?

 

It was without hesitation. I wonder if he gave an "and one" plus a little extra.
