Covcath won because of how tough they played defensively. I said it during the preseason...they might not be as talented as some of the best teams in the state, but what allows them to compete with ANYONE is how physical they play defense and how many different looks they can throw at you because of their depth and versatility. Very disciplined team at both ends of the court.

 

I'm not buying the mental thing. These Newcath kids are mentally tough and have played in big time atmospheres throughout their careers. Just one of those games where Covcath was better and made more plays. Nothing more, nothing less. Newcath will be fine.

 

Not sure if Pangallo played/dressed varsity as a freshman, but if not, Drew McDonald is the only Newcath senior that has experienced a win at the varsity level against Covcath.

To me CCH is a team of skinny skilled ball players who know their roles and do what the coach asks of them. They also now believe that they should win, they expect to win and as soon as they see the other team doubt them selfs or get frustrated CCH players get more excited and the confidence keeps building.

 

I think overall CCH has better players and they play like they feel the same as me.

NCC looked to me like they hoped they could win and CCH looked like they knew they were going to win.

You're right... They have much more "basketball" skill yet they have lost the past two years in a "basketball" game. Call it however you want...I think panda makes a good point.

 

Please tell me that you can tell the difference. Your screen name says that you are a hoops fan. You are telling me that you have never seen a better group of ball players lose to a good group of ball players who played harder? NewCath's group is extremely skilled. CovCath has 1 player who was one of the top 2 on the court Friday and then you have a group of kids that are good basketball players and work and scrap extremely hard. It is not an insult, it is a compliment to CovCath. If anything, it would be viewed as an insult to NewCath.

The more I say the less I'm understood, which is probably my fault for being so wordy.

 

I explored various angles within my post in the other thread on this topic all the while giving props to NewCath for their excellence, tradition, and validity.

 

In an effort to avoid anyone thinking that I was painting a picture of grave differences between both team's strengths I even began my other post by stating that CovCath is not "heads and shoulders" above them and made a point of magnifying that NewCath is still a force to be reckoned with, and have a rich winning tradition.

 

By suggesting that in this particular game that ONE possible advantage that CovCath demonstrated over NewCath was a more mentally preparedness was not to express that NewCath is completely void of it.

 

CovCath's relentless action from start to finish had an obvious impact on NewCath's game, and getting in their heads was obvious to anyone in attendance. There was frustration on the faces of the Breds, while that look was never displayed by the cool, controlled, focused, and steady Colonels.

 

When praising the attributes of one team, there's a tendency for some to consider that this is suggesting the absence of that attribute from the other. In pointing out the "edge" when discussing this strength, I was not suggesting that NewCath is void of it, and I made of point of saying so to avoid being misunderstood.

 

So much for thinking ahead of what others might say or think, and trying to be specific enough to avoid my points being misrepresented, for it seems that my thoughts turned into being misunderstood anyhow.

 

Not the first time, and obviously won't be the last. There's a tendency for some while reading to not be able to separate their brain's injected assumed thoughts from the content they are absorbing, and by the time they've finished said content their minds have already transformed that content into something they have assumed that I said, and not what I've actually said.

 

Then when those points are indeed misrepresented there is the painstaking measure taken to revisit actual statements made to express unnecessary clarification.

 

I'll partly take responsibility for any misunderstanding of my long drawn out posts because in being wordy I don't do myself, or anyone else any favors.

 

An overload of thoughts is bound to create these such undesirable reactions to way too much information to process.

 

My OCD is in full effect when creating such lengthy content, and then comes right back into play when re-dissecting such content in an effort to clarify that which has already been said.

 

With all that said, I'd be blind not to have the self-awarness that I do in fact have OCD closure issues, and am brevity challenged.

 

No doubt that many of you have already made this diagnosis of me long ago.

We all knew that he could knock down 3's, but he showed us that he's SO MUCH MORE than that.

 

Exciting to see his dynamite coming out party on the big stage, and he can dream easy tonight knowing that his effort was more than key to the Colonel's victory.

 

No doubt in my mind that this will be a huge confidence boost for him, and that we've only seen the beginning of what he can do.

 

He can think the word "STARTER" now and know that he's without a doubt a lock for the job. He's the piece of the puzzle that the Colonels have been needing and his timing couldn't have been better.

 

I was WAY wrong about NewCath and what I expected to see from them. I wasn't surprised by what the Colonels brought, I was just super surprised that NewCath looked so much more inferior.

 

That big stage BOK monkey on their back is obviously still plaguing them, and I was having flashbacks of last season's 9th Region tourney appearance and how the jinx for them is still ever so present. I just know that they are so much more than what we saw in them, but sadly for them they just couldn't manage to show it.

 

The Colonels are so well conditioned, and I never once got the impression that they were tired. The same cannot be said about the Breds. The Colonels were feisty and relentless giving NewCath fits all night with solid swarming "D" and just wearing them down.

 

The plan for NCC to have all their mighty options in place to keep CovCath in trouble never came to be in the least.

 

Foul trouble with Weyer, and injury with Pangallo turned things stagnate for them leaving too much work for McDonald to try to handle, and his frustration was ever so clear that his typical helping hands were severely missing in action.

 

I have to give him credit for not letting his bubble burst because he did look to be right on the edge at times. He's bound to have claustrophobic nightmares over this tonight ruining any idea of getting a good night's sleep. Poor guy.

 

Just like last season, this Colonel bunch is an awesome TEAM. Their never say die attitude helps them find ways to win. They emphatically make the statement that they will not be denied. You might have other teams in the state boasting D1 candidates, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more exciting TEAM in the state, and ultimately that's what great high school ball is all about.

 

You can bore me all day long with nationally ranked teams with little to no spirit, and players looking ahead to the next level, but a TEAM like the Colonels are WINNERS, and it's hard not to embrace that, and get behind them.

 

Awesome night at the BOK with great basketball all around. The main event did not disappoint as it put an exclamation point on the whole evening. This event lived up to its billing and showed with so many hineys in the seats of the arena that the tradition of high school basketball is alive and well here in NKY, and that legendary games are not a thing of the past.

 

Great to see so many BGP's members in the house, and the chance to meet a few for the first time, namely AME1981, and also to finally meet lawildcat. You've got fun written all over your face.

 

And to think that this was just a warm up because we've got two more of these great nights of basketball on tap in the near future, and not to mention the ever exciting 9th Region Tournament.

 

From the time that the doors opened at 4:30 to the sounding of the final horn at 10:30 some might think we should all be worn from 6 hours but honestly the night seemed to fly by.

 

I haven't had enough so I'm gonna listen to the game all over again at CovCath Internet Radio. No doubt that it's going to be worth a listen to relive all that Colonel greatest of the evening once more.

That's an interesting observation, only because that is how Coach Dawn has been so effective over the years .. with full-court, in-your-face, high intensity defense. You would think his teams would respond better to it because of their familiarity with it.

I think it was the first step in the mental tactics which worked because it got in their heads. Not saying it was right/wrong but for me it wasn't what I expected to see from CCH.

 

I really don't not fist bumping had anything to do with the game. Poor sportmanship in my opinion.

Could it be CCH is simply better? All this coaches and head games seems like a Hoosiers movie. Lace em up and whomever puts more on the board when the horn sounds is best.

Interesting to read what everyone thinks. I also was at courtside Friday night. Very simply, the Colonels played tough defense, and the Breds had a difficult time handling it. Too many turnovers, missed FT's etc. I was surprised at how the officials "let them play". But that's where you have to adapt to how they are calling the game. To me, it's just one game, and probably will benefit NCC more. The All A is starting, and that loss should serve as a wake up call for the 'Breds. Fridays game is over...a thing of the past. You can learn from it, but don't dwell on it. Only thing that really surprised me was how the Cov Cath assistants were constantly trying to work the officials. Officials owe no explanation to any assistant coach period. Officials should be talking to the head coach only. It really look silly. These assistant coaches need to get a life; it's not about them.
