I was just reading Twitter and Lance McAllister is on the opposite side of me on this issue , so now I'm even more comfortable with my position.

Blowouts happen in NKY in every sport every week. Don't hear too much about coaches getting suspended for it.

 

Would anyone be happier if it would have been 40-5, or 80-8?

 

Does anyone really think the losing team players will now suddenly all become mass-murderers because they got blown-out? They lost a basketball game. Move on.

 

Losing motivates you and teaches you lessons even more so than winning. Learn from it.

In roller hockey the you can have an 8-0 game or a 9-1 game or a 20-12 game. But the maximum spread will be 8 since the mercy rule is not a running clock but a mercy - game called.

 

If people are so aghast at the spread here the get a rule to just end the game at some pre-set differential.

 

 

I have been at ice hockey games that were familiarly lopsided as this. After a certain point you just quit putting up the points/goals on the scoreboard. I wonder if there is a rule that you have to display the score at game.

I am intrigued, based on the earlier post, as to why a school with 2,700 students can't field a basketball team that could score...say 10 points anyway. I agree, don't rub in the superiority, but are we not going to penalize ineptitude either? Maybe the other team is bad because the coach is bad, the good athletes won't play for him/her and quit, so he/she only has players that wouldn't have made the team otherwise. Then, we they get clobbered, the winning coach is penalized for proving the point. As a matter of fact, maybe all the winning coach's players came from the losing coach's school and wanted to make a point. My imagination can take this a lot of directions.

 

This has me wondering as well. It stands to reason that a school of this size has to be good at something. Law of averages dictates that. I wonder what other girls' sports coincide with their hoops season, or is basketball just being sacrificed to club sports season? Volleyball is pretty big in Cali. I would presume soccer is as well as softball, and with their weather, there's not much getting in the way of practicing outdoors. Swimming might be a draw as well.

 

While it doesn't have 2,700 students, Central Hardin just across my county line has fallen on tough times. Their volleyball and soccer teams have been among the best in the region for some time. Volleyball, especially, has contributed to CH's erosion from one of the top teams in the 5th Region and state.

If I'm a bad person because I think the bench players from a significantly better team deserve to get their minutes, then so be it. Society is soft, and it's because we protect young people from the real world. The reality is you are going to get your brains beat in a time or two, and nobody is scarred for life because of it. I've said it in different threads and it applies here also, if my 2nd string is that much much better than your 1st string, that's your problem, not mine.

So the coach is a loser because he didn't tell his bench players to hold the ball for 30 seconds and then just turn it over?

No, he's a loser for pressing the entire first half, then running an aggressive trapping halfcourt defense in the 2nd half of a 104-1 game.

We just aren't going to agree about the 1st Half. I think that is completely fair game.

 

I'll give you that they could have laid off the trapping part of the defense in the 2nd Half, but other than that, I have no problem with him letting his bench players play to their full potential.

I think the thing we aren't agreeing on are the methods the coach used. I have NO problem whatsoever with the bench players coming in and firing at will. I agree that they have earned the right to play minutes and have their opportunities.

 

In this particular game, there's just no excuse for anything other than a laid back man-to-man or even 2-3 zone defense.
