January 16, 201511 yr That's right. 161-2. In response, Arroyo Valley's board suspended coach Michael Anderson for two games. Anderson will return to the sideline Jan. 19. Anderson had said he tried to keep the game as even as possible despite knowing that his team was far too good for the competition. "I didn't expect them to be that bad," he said, according to the Daily Bulletin. "I'm not trying to embarrass anybody. And I didn't expect my bench to play that well. I had one (bench) player make eight of nine 3s." Calif. HS suspends girls' hoops coach after 161-2 victory | NCAA Basketball | Sporting News
January 16, 201511 yr hard to tell kids who never play not to shoot itIn grade school I was the last boy off the bench so I know the feeling. Some games I didn't get into until we were 30 - 40 points ahead. I shot he ball ever chance I got. You can't tell kids that don't get to play, not to score and have fun.
January 16, 201511 yr The person who should be suspended is whomever scheduled the game, not the coach. You can't tell your bench players, that rarely play, to not shoot.
January 16, 201511 yr I don't care if you're playing against a blind team. You can't beat a team 161-2, under any circumstance. I don't care if the players don't get to play a lot or not. The coach should have taught his kids some sportsmanship and told them to stop taking shots or at least pass the ball around and run offense before taking a shot.
January 16, 201511 yr A lot of guys who are saying this is cool seem to be ignoring the fact that they ran a full court trapping press the entire first half: Arroyo Valley (15-1) used a full-court trap for the entire first half, which resulted in a 104-1 halftime score. The Hawks called off the dogs, so to speak, using a halfcourt trap in the second half, much to the chagrin of Chung.
January 16, 201511 yr Plus it sounded like there was a shot clock. The trap definitely shouldn't have been used though.
January 16, 201511 yr The trap definitely shouldn't have been used though.I'll agree with that, but you can't blame the kids that don't play much for having fun.
January 16, 201511 yr Boooooooooooooooooo.....weak to suspend the coach. I find this hilarious on so many levels. Somebody needs to work on defending the three and ball handling drills or something. Press break...something.
January 16, 201511 yr So he told his team to hold the ball until the shot clock got to within 7 seconds and folks are still mad? That's asinine. The state won't turn on the running clock until the 4th quarter and he asked them to turn it on earlier and the refs said no? They play with a shot clock and there is still an issue over the score? Asinine.
January 16, 201511 yr I'll agree with that, but you can't blame the kids that don't play much for having fun. I blame the coach. There's just no excuse to be full court pressing in a 78-1 game.
January 16, 201511 yr I blame the coach. There's just no excuse to be full court pressing in a 78-1 game. No argument there but a coach shouldn't be suspended for that. That's weak. In Ky that game would have had a running clock in the 2nd quarter and we don't have shot clocks so the score wouldn't have been as high as 161. The rules of California high school basketball influenced this score just as much as the coach did.
