January 16, 201511 yr A lot of guys who are saying this is cool seem to be ignoring the fact that they ran a full court trapping press the entire first half: Arroyo Valley (15-1) used a full-court trap for the entire first half, which resulted in a 104-1 halftime score. The Hawks called off the dogs, so to speak, using a halfcourt trap in the second half, much to the chagrin of Chung. THAT's the issue and not just the scoring. It's the "how." I would not tell my subs they cannot shoot. They practice. They show up. They work. I'm going to let them get their names in the scorebook. I just am not going to have them getting those points out of a press or trapping D. I'd play a tight M2M or even a zone just to give the other team a chance to shoot so my team could get the ball and get a chance to score.

The press allowed them to run up 104 of the points in the first half. That's just pathetic. It's not the players fault at all. They were just doing what the coach wanted.

January 16, 201511 yr Still not worthy of suspending a coach over it. I'm cool with sending a coach a message. He was wrong for his actions even if his intent was not bad. We're all accountable.

January 16, 201511 yr I'm cool with sending a coach a message. He was wrong for his actions even if his intent was not bad. We're all accountable. Agree to disagree. He didn't do anything illegal. He shouldn't be suspended for being what some people would call being a jerk. Where is the line drawn? I know a lot of coaches and referees that are jerks. Can we suspend them too? What about fans? Some of the biggest jerks around. Can we suspend them too?
January 16, 201511 yr In grade school I was the last boy off the bench so I know the feeling. Some games I didn't get into until we were 30 - 40 points ahead. I shot he ball ever chance I got. You can't tell kids that don't get to play, not to score and have fun. I feel ya, I had a steller high school basketball career. I finished up with a grand total of 1 point for the season on a Freshman "B" team. To do any worse I would have had to have not playerd. But I loved basketall so it was worth it. And you can bet that whatever few minutes or seconds of playing time that i got, I was jacking up a shot no matter how far ahead we may have been.
January 16, 201511 yr Zero problem with the full court trap in the first half, IMO. I will have to disagree, my man. You go into a game with a few goals. 1. Make your team better 2. Try to win Once both of those are accomplished to continue to press against a team that probably does not have ONE player who could play on YOUR team is simply gratuitous and has no value in high school sports.

Every school and school district gets to say what they deem acceptable and unacceptable.

In order to accomplish #1 in a game like this, you have to work on things. What's wrong with working on their full court trap for only a half? Probably got everyone on the roster a chance to work on it, and improve on spacing, positioning, and the like.
January 16, 201511 yr I went through this a few weeks ago with parents of opposing team that we beat 55-13 (middle school) who told me I had "no integrity" by beating their team that way. Some may remember my post about it. Funny thing is, it COULD have been a score much closer to the game we are talking about here...if I had wanted it to be. Not that we are that good, but the team we played was just that bad. I could see the team was terrible from the get go during warm-ups, so we never pressed for one second, ran our basic 1-3-1 d for the first 3 quarters then ran a very soft 2-3 the 4th quarter. We took nothing but mid range jumpers that last quarter, nothing inside, and only after so many passes. With only 8 kids couldn't do a lot of subbing, but our weaker players played much of the game. We could have easily scored in the 80's and quite possibly held the other team scoreless, or no more than a free throw or two, again had we played to do so. When I calmly tried to explain that to the parents, fire flew from their eyes and I was accused of being "cocky and arrogant" in an email sent to our church. Whew. I got no problem with getting beat badly, because I have been on that end of it more times than I would like to remember. However, if I'm down 70 or 80 points in the first half and the other team is STILL pressing...I might have to have a few words with that coach at half time. I mean really, if your team is THAT much better than the other team, it's not helping your team insofar as developing and working on the press anyway. You could probably make a ton of mistakes and be out of position and still get the ball regardless. Things could have been done to keep this score down quite a bit. Still would have been a huge blowout, but could have been "less bad" with some different choices by the coach.
January 16, 201511 yr Easy solution. Turn the scoreboard off. That's how people want it to be at nowadays.
January 16, 201511 yr That's how people want it to be at nowadays. Yep. Don't keep score if you don't want to know.
