California Girls Hoops Coach Suspended After 161-2 Win

Featured Replies

I can agree with that, in the 2nd Half.

I think in this situation, there's no excuse for pressing in the first half. It was obvious even before the game that it was going to be a blowout. The coaches discussed it before the game.

If that coach had any class whatsoever, he doesn't come out pressing. 104-1 in a half is inexcusable.

and indefensible, imo. The school must have agreed since they suspended him.

Schools do stupid stuff all the time. That has been well documented on this board.

Trying to look at it from the coaches point of view - I dont think that it was right to run up the score to this extent (His team basically scored a basket every 20 seconds) but if no rules were broken I not sure why he was suspended unless he was previously warned.

Another thought I had was maybe the coach is an advocate for rule changes regarding the aforementioned CA high school rules (no running clock and shot clock) and was making that point.

Still not cool in my book but a couple more thoughts...

You can really learn a lot about the posters on BGP by reading a thread like this.

Agreed alot of people falling in line with America going soft.

If the coach wanted to work on the press in first half with all his players and he thought it would help improve his team I have no pronlem. Eventually you do say quit pressing and fast breaking so you can work on other parts of game. Use is it as a practic . Run all your half court sets whether they are playing zone or man. Switch up defenses for practice. Heck the coach took off the wheel more than I would of. I wouldn't of help the ball that long because it doesn't make my team better. I would of ran sets and each time told my players off which option to score. 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th option off each set. I'm not as a coach going to waste anytime to make my team better for some weird soft attitude some are putting forth. In the last few minutes I may go four corners.

Some of you need to get off your high horses.

Yep that's my source of good decision making school adminstrators . (Sarcasm)

Doesn't matter if it's a league game or not. They could've easily said they weren't playing it. They get a forfeit loss, the other team gets a win in the record book.

I have heard it is not a league game but if it was, you cannot fire the guy who scheduled it. That is what I was getting at...not applicable to this situation though

I agree that the country is getting softer, the coach should not be suspended, and the girls on the losing end of this game will be just fine...no shrinks needed because of this beat down.

However, 161-2??? C'mon man, the coach is a jerk to do this to the other team IMO. If you are OK with 161-2, are you OK with 528-0?? Is there any score you are not OK with? Most people have a score they are not OK with...161-2 is a score I am not OK with...

You're not working on anything when the game is 161-2. That's a joke and an embarrassment. They work on layups in practice. They don't need to use a helpless opponent to do layup drills.

I can run every play in my playbook and score on every option. I would use it as a practice. Most coaches I know would do the same. It's wasted time if you don't and as a high school coach you already have limited time with your players.

Heck if I was a man to man team I may practice a few differnt types of zones in second half just to see how my players react.

But whether I'm down 100 or up 100 it's my job as a coach to make sure I still work to make my players better.

Would this have been just as okay with you had this been 7 and 8 yo girls instead of 15 and 16 yo's?

They do it the way we are headed at 7 and 8 years old of age.....they don't keep score. Only the parents in the stands keep score at that age.

I have a problem with the losing coach not being suspended as well. At what point should he/she just said, enough game over and the teams ended the game.
