January 16, 201511 yr You won the game in the first 3 minutes of the game. Play hard M2M and force your team to learn how to play defense for a longer period of time than they're used to. Most players are only wired to play D for a short period of time. You need to get them used to playing longer periods of D to be ready for THAT good team that runs a controlled passing/cutting offense. You don't have to steal the ball. Just move your feet. Play help D and force passes. That's how a team benefits from this type of game. The running clock rule was designed for games just like this one. So the fix is to play solid, non pressure man to man or zone defense? Can they rebound or have a fast break or do they need to slow it up on turnovers and let the other team set up their defense? It's already been identified how flawed the California rules are. Their rules make it way too easy for games like this to happen. A shot clock and no running clock until the 4th quarter? They are asking for 80-19 scores.
January 16, 201511 yr This isn't the pros. Every school in the state gets to field a team. Some are awful. They can't get better to the point of not being embarrassed. You just don't have to kill a team like this. Then don't play games like this. Simple as that.

We're talking about pressing HARD up by 80 points IN THE FIRST HALF. That's the issue.
January 16, 201511 yr Calling off the dogs? Heck, this coach broke out dogs, whips, water hoses, and baseball bats in the first half. And then one of his bench players comes in and hits 8 or 9 three pointers. Apparently after the shot clock got below 7 seconds. What can you do.......
January 16, 201511 yr Then don't play games like this. Simple as that. Some schools have made that choice. Heritage doesn't play the big 33rd district teams probably for this reason. They just take the last seed for the tourney. The losing team certainly has to take a hard look at what's best for them.
January 16, 201511 yr We're not talking about an 80-19 score. We're talking about pressing HARD up by 80 points IN THE FIRST HALF. That's the issue. Not for me it isn't. Anything goes in the first half in my world.
January 16, 201511 yr And then one of his bench players comes in and hits 8 or 9 three pointers. Apparently after the shot clock got below 7 seconds. What can you do....... Apparently, they should've just let the shot clock run out. Or maybe they could've gotten defensive rebounds and just handed the ball back to the other team. :idunno:
January 16, 201511 yr And then one of his bench players comes in and hits 8 or 9 three pointers. Apparently after the shot clock got below 7 seconds. What can you do....... If a kid is good enough to hit a shot from 20 feet God bless them. Have at it. I'm never going to tell a kid, especially a reserve ,to not score. You just don't have to be a bully and press girls that can't dribble and turn it into a layup line.

January 16, 201511 yr Not for me it isn't. Anything goes in the first half in my world. I guess it depends on what your goals are for the game. You're the coach. Tell me your goals for the game and how you are accomplishing them in this type of game.
January 16, 201511 yr Okay, so if they're making the decision to play the game, take your lumps and move on. Again, we're not talking taking "lumps."
January 16, 201511 yr Again, we're not talking taking "lumps." Yes we are. If you can't handle the outcome, don't play the game. Simple as that.
January 16, 201511 yr Okay, so if they're making the decision to play the game, take your lumps and move on. Lumps? It was 104-1 because of a full court trapping press. This is the equivalent of turning a legless fox loose and then allowing your dogs to "hunt" it. They weren't just shooting fish in a barrel. They shocked the fish, then shot them when they floated to the top of the water.
January 16, 201511 yr Yes we are. If you can't handle the outcome, don't play the game. Simple as that. So the other school isn't smart enough to not schedule the game. Some adult made that decision. Why not just press the whole game and keep all 5 starters in for 32 minutes? Make it a 228 - 1 game.
January 16, 201511 yr I guess it depends on what your goals are for the game. You're the coach. Tell me your goals for the game and how you are accomplishing them in this type of game. When I coached a couple of middle school games last season I called off the press when we got up by 20 points. I knew we had the game won and I coached in a politically correct manner the rest of the game. If not for our PC world I'd have pressed the whole game and gone home and slept like a baby regardless of the score. Everybody is different. Some care about people's feelings when it comes to sports. Some don't. I know to turn the press off because people will start crying about sportsmanship and all that other crap. At the same time I have zero issue with any coach that doesn't care to be PC and runs the score up as much as they want to. It is what it is. To answer your question, because of this world we live in my goal would be to get all of my bench players in double figures scoring.
