January 15, 201511 yr Author It may not make much sense to us, however people definitely responded to it. Those aren't people.
January 15, 201511 yr I was wondering how many people would remember Smokey's mind games on Debo. Apparently just you and I did.

January 15, 201511 yr This was obviously a dumb comment. But it is interesting to wonder if that terrible call was never made how would that of impacted the Patriots moving forward.

It did just as much for Vinateri as it did for Brady. W/out the tuck rule, who is to say that Vinateri gets to kick the tying and winning field goals in the snow and then the winner against the Rams. If he doesn't get those chances, would he have been able to do it in '03?

January 15, 201511 yr Show me one motivational speech that actually made sense. He has passion, I'll give him that. Coherent sentences are not his strong suit.

You have to wonder. Brady that season was not the Brady we know today or even of the past decade. He was practically a rookie thrown in to the fire and was a game manager. Nobody was saying, "wow, this guy is super talented and on his way to stardom," even through the Superbowl. I re-watched that Superbowl this summer and Brady was handcuffed and pretty much incapable of doing much. Missing open receivers, etc. The Pats dinked and dunked the whole game. You have to wonder if they would have gone back to Bledsoe to start the next season. However, once the next year got rolling, you could tell they had a gem, despite the Pats going 9-7.

This was a Boston fan base who was bitter and had not won a major sports title in a long time. If they lost another chance at a title on a freak play who knows the back lash that would of came out toward Brady and the Patriots. How would a young Tom Brady react to vile that would of came his way. Would Belichek trust his young QB who fumbled in a key moment. Again it was dumb comment because of all the great things Brady has done. But it is interesting to look back and see how one bad call impacted a franchise and a player.

Could have been a ripple effect, you never know. Say the Pats stuck with Brady and they went 9-7 like they did the next season, people would have just thought it was them coming back down to earth. Maybe Rodney Harrison never signs because the Patriots do not have the same cache? Maybe a free agent or two leaves or doesn't come to the Patriots. You never know. Talent normally rises to the top, so I am sure Brady would have gotten his opportunity somewhere along the way.
January 16, 201511 yr ESPN believes any athlete who once was among the best at his craft is automatically a great commentator. They seem to forget that a lot of these athletes took basket weaving 101 to get through school. That is unless you attended UNC where no class was required to graduate.
