Healthy Dog to be Put Down Today to Honor Deceased Owner's Wishes

Featured Replies

I heard this story on the local news this am but can't find a link to it anywhere. I'll keep looking and try to find something.

A deceased woman left instructions in her will that her beloved german shepherd be put down and his ashes be buried with hers. People have come forward hoping to adopt the dog and save him.

This morning at 9am, the healthy dog was to be euthanized.

IMO, this is a selfish act by the woman and I can't believe there are no laws to prevent this from happening!

What say you?

Agree. Animal rights activists should be all over this.

Maybe she was concerned that nobody will care for the dog like she did, once she is gone?

I agree it is a selfish act, but probably her intentions are to keep the dog out of a shelter. I hope a vet will not do it until at least a placement is tried. I wondered if she tried to re-home the dog first.

People have a history of treating animals as if they are disposable property...and in the laws eyes, they are and have few if any rights.

Animals are considered property according to the law. Owners property is to be processed according to the last wishes of the owner.

We dont give dogs rights for anything, we spade them and neuter them without the dogs permission, we kill them when they bite someone, we kill them when they are ill.

I don't have a problem with it.

Agreed...she had a right to do this. Who knows...it might be what the dog would want.

Very often in the shelter where I volunteer, we will have pets show up in the shelter where the owner has passed away and other family members are not willing or able to take on the responsibility for the pets. It is a sad situation, and it makes me sure that I have an end of life plan for my pets as well as our assets. So far, that plan is for the dogs to have homes.

I don't have a problem with it.

Me either.

Well, when I pass my two cats will be in my casket with me. One passed 2 1/2 years ago and the other is now 18 1/2 years old. Even being rely religious, if I pass before her, I'll be ticked, lol.

But, I'll be in a mausoleum, so they can just wait until she passes and open my casket back up.

Sad, but I do see her point. You see and hear of not only animals being mistreated, but kids are well in adoptive and foster homes. Also, there is that bond tansy some pets and people have, and once the owner passes the pet is miserable. Plus, now many healthy animals are put to sleep each year? Can't find enough homes for them, even all the healthy ones.

And as was mentioned, we have animals being put down just because they bit one or two people, they are still healthy correct? Are we going to put down a human who bites someone? Where are the pets rights here?

Comparing human lives to animal lives is one of the most absurd arguments that is commonly made....

IYO. Not in the opinion of many. Comaparing doesn't mean equalling. However, animals have a same capacity to suffer and avoid suffering, thus in the opinion of many of us, they deserve at a minimum the rights to be protected from unnecessary suffering. Of course that would be an attribute of a developed civilization of which we are not much of the time.

All I can say is I hope SportsGuy's comment about putting down a human that bites someone and animals' rights was a joke...

All excellent points.

Why doesn't the dog get a chance to live? I'm definitely not in to PETA and I think many of those animal rights activists are nuts...but I'm sorry I'm just not down with this. I'd almost bet that if you looked into it, this lady was probably a little nuts herself.
