That's what i was thinking. Anytime a press release is as long as the lord of the rings, somebody somewhere is covering something up.

 

But my other reaction is ...little bit of an overreaction. Calls are blown all the time. Calls that impact the game. What about holding calls that aren't made that allow that touchdown pass to be made? This isn't a slippery slope, it's a cliff.

 

I mean, as much as I don't like Murray, and it's a lot lol, they got a terrible call. And I disagree that the call has to be made every time. It shouldn't have been called, and then they botched the application of the call. Murray got it twice. But to think this is special, a bad call heaven forbid, and to react this strongly, just seems wrong to me.

 

The call was made live with it. The fact Murray is getting a review and a referee crew is being suspended is beyond belief. Only Murray high gets appeals and kids reinstated for throwing a punches.

 

The sad thing is for the kids on the team, but their coaches have been coaching from the numbers and get to go to the 15 yard line and coach is kinda poetic justice.

 

Watch next year. Coaches won't even be in the white box. Players and coaches will be coaching from the track. A point of emphasis will be put on this next year and more games will be won or lost from the new rule. Just watch!

Really unfortunate for Murray, but it really is all KHSAA could do. Judgment in the flow of the game is way different than misapplication of a rule. Not sure why they delivered consequences for the total association of officials in the playoffs. Maybe I missed something or I don't know something, but that doesn't seem fair to those that did nothing. I do think it was fair consequences for the officials involved.

 

I think the Commissioner handles it well and did about all he could to explain what happened, his remorse for the situation and decisive action for the offense.

This is not a surprise at all. I watched a high school game this past year just as fan. Team A threw the ball at least 35+ times in the first half. and Team B ran it at least 35+ times. Two very different teams. Team A was never flagged for holding one time, and Team B was flagged 6 times. Maybe the game should be called nerf, because it is starting to appear that physical teams in which football is physical sport seem to picked on by officials. IE Belfy/Central both physcial not many flags.

As a former official I. Am extremely disappointed that at least one out of the five on the game did not know the proper administration of the penalty. It is everyonesesponsibility, not just the referee. If you have any doubt you stop the game and discuss the issue immediately. Sadly, it appears that none of. The coaches knew the proper administration either, or even enough to question the rule administration. Each team should have at least one rules guy.

So did the KHSAA wait until the championship games were played to announce this? It appears to be something that would not take long to figure out they got it wrong. Did this crew work a championship game? I agree with the post that states it is sad that not one official in that crew knew how to properly administer the penalty.

There are many good officials out there across the state. Those guys are real professionals. But I also have ran across so that make you shake your head and say "yep the test is open book"

What about the incorrectly called 2-pointer in OT of the 2011 Basketball State Championship? DJ Townsend of Rowan made a 3 with his foot on the college 3-point line with about 10 sec left in OT. It was called a 2 point shot and put Rowan down 3 instead of 2. Christian County followed by missing the front end of a one and one. Rowan rebounded and Darrell Cross made a 3 at the buzzer to send it into double overtime, would have been the game winner of the correct call was made. Anyone remember this? Anyone know if any sanctions were handed out?

 

Come on. Not even remotely the same situation. In this football issue they did not now the rules. In the example you cite it was a judgement all as to where the foot was. Why would you punish an official for a judgement call that he made? It wasn't obvious by looking at the replay.

Since we are talking about responsibility, the coach from Murray would not be on my staff next year, or disciplined at the very least (not saying that he isn't being disciplined currently because I don't know). This situation never occurs if the coaches are following the expectations and the rules. Our society is quickly becoming reactionary instead of preventive. It is unfortunate that the officials blew this call and they are being dealt with. Murray's Coach should not be using this as an excuse, own the sideline issues, make corrections, and move on, that will teach his players a valuable life lesson more than anything else that can be done at this time. IMO

Thanks. I over stated the circumstances then - probably should read it better. Actually this year I noticed there were not 'monitors' on the sideline during the playoff games - at least the first 3 rounds.

 

Not sure if they were using the 'put together crews' but if so this is one of the issues that can happen. Out of 5 officials 1 or more probably knew it was wrong call but if they were not a regular crew working together on regular basis then I could easily see the junior (or self perceived junior) officials deferring to the white hat.

 

Its a tough job - especially in the tight, emotional games.

Fire, demote or discipline yes. A coach should never put an official in a position to impact the game, it is uncalled for, he is an adult and should lead by example, at the very least the score would have been tied and Murray would have been kicking off from the 25, giving great field position to Desales. Once again own your mistakes, you clearly are the product of this same thinking, lets find someone else to blame when I screw up. The officials are owning their mistake, but Murray coaching staff is not according to the news.

Who is saying the coach did not make a mistake? I am not. I have no dog in the fight and don't know the Murray coaches at all. They could be great or horrible. Regarding the officials owning their mistake, what choice to they have? It is a black and white area when it comes to administering the rules. They got it wrong. Admitting it is like saying 2+2=4. Everyone already knows it.

 

The refs screwed up plain and simple. Making occasional mistakes on judgment calls is acceptable - not knowing the rules and how to apply them is not. It is the coach's fault for being called for the penalty. It is NOT his fault the ref screwed up the application of the rule. Firing a coach for getting a sideline penalty seems CRAZY to me.
