Who is saying the coach did not make a mistake? I am not. I have no dog in the fight and don't know the Murray coaches at all. They could be great or horrible. Regarding the officials owning their mistake, what choice to they have? It is a black and white area when it comes to administering the rules. They got it wrong. Admitting it is like saying 2+2=4. Everyone already knows it.

 

The refs screwed up plain and simple. Making occasional mistakes on judgment calls is acceptable - not knowing the rules and how to apply them is not. It is the coach's fault for being called for the penalty. It is NOT his fault the ref screwed up the application of the rule. Firing a coach for getting a sideline penalty seems CRAZY to me.

 

You are correct, we all know the officials screwed up, they owned their mistake and apologized and moved on. Murray's coaching staff, of whom I know none of them, have only made excuses for why they didn't win and have put all the blame on the officials, from what the press is saying. I am speaking to the entire situation, not "just getting a sideline penalty".

 

Clearly it is a extreme annoyance of mine when adults don't model ownership, I see the negative effects of this on a daily basis, so that clearly plays a roll in the lenses I see this issue through.

 

What I have a problem with is why does everyone (other schools) never get things appealed?

I know Raceland has had one successful appealed when a defender jumped off the back of another player to block a game tying extra point. Man, that kid was 15 feet in the air, no joke. The officiating crew was suspended for three games.

 

Raceland also had one appealed that went their way on the field when a LCA player was ejected for kicking and the video clearly showed he did not kick another player.

 

I think it happens more then some may know, it's just not publicized enough.

Also I do agree that the fact the coach should understand the rules, but no way should the coach be punished or fired. There would be no coaches left if they were all fired for breaking rules. As the report says it should be called every time, and correctly administered every time. I would be interested in seeing other games this crew has worked. Still hard to believe all 5 didn't know how to administer the penalty.

I wondered that, Murray can never catch a break huh.

Sometimes the best rule is CSR..... Common Sense Rule. Score the TD and then give the option for the penalty. Err on the side of good judgement.

Not interested in bending any rule. Simply wanting good judgement in applying penalty to the aforementioned violation. If you are not 100% sure use common sense.

THX. As I said previously, score the TD and then look at the penalty options. Apparently this violation was the 2nd, so the max penalty would be 5 yards. Since it is a dead ball situation at the conclusion of the play and the play is a TD then I would assume that the opposing coach would have the option to take the penalty either on the PAT or KO. CSR

Not to get off subject, but what calls (not necessarily penalties) can nullify a TD in progress. 1. Holding, 2. Clipping, 3. Illegal formation, 4. Stepped out of bounds, 5. Down by contact (knee, forearm), 6. Hurdling, 7. Runner grabs facemask of opponent, 8. Offensive pass interference, 9. Illegal participation. Any others?

Was glad to see the ruling from the commissioner, I wasn't sure on that officials ruling. Obviously was devastating for the team that it cost, biggest hurt there was the kids and that's what this entire thing called high school football.

GOT ONE! It's something NO officals EVER calls taunting or showboating during a live ball.

There are many good officials out there across the state. Those guys are real professionals. But I also have ran across so that make you shake your head and say "yep the test is open book"

Could this also be a direct result of a watered down classification system? Perhaps the numbers are just not there for really good or for this argument "State Championship" or playoff caliber referees to do all 6 games.

 

IDK, just thinking a total system might just have gotten exploited with this one by basically telling all teams that we do not have enough qualified and very good referess but we want to make sure at least 5 games or perhpas even less get the really good ones and then its a crap shoot from there on and lets keep our fingers crossed. :thumb:

 

It would be interesting to see the protocol for the 6 Games. Do they assign randomly or do they start with 6A and assign their A team and move on down the ladder. Could just be the case here since this game is 2A.

 

I do know for a fact that the referees in the 4A State Chapionship game did not know the rules on at least two calls that I remember and one was for each team so I guess it works out in the end...
