As for the outcome of the game, I was hoping Russell might be able to step up and have a good outing when it really counted.

I agree with the 1st game jitters. 1st time on the big stage in 34 years, plus playing a top 5 in the state defensive team, adds up to a low scoring game.

 

When was the last 16th region team to make it past the 1st round? 2nd round?

Rose Hill lost to Louisville Ballard by five points in the second round of the 2003 tournament. Of course, as Rose Hill's many detractors like to point out, that team had a few key players who did not have deep roots in the 16th Region.

Russell did what they had to do to make it to Rupp. Certainly not the kind of showing we would have liked to see, but the kids worked through alot of adversity this season to make it a special one. After the preview cover this season, many on this board were bashing the Devils' for being overrated. No matter what the case, they were playing basketball today, or at least a close facsimile, and over 200 other schools were getting ready for baseball season.

:lol: A friend of mine at Rupp just called me and said the JV game had just finished and it was time for the varsity game to tip off.

It was wonderful see the Russell Team on the of Rupp Arena. It was great for the fans. So what if we lost - we were still there and that was better than most teams could say. We can build on this experience for next year. I was very pleased that Coach Dodd allowed the bench boys time on the floor. This will be a great memory for them and something they can share with their grandchildren years from now. As I said - so what - Russell made it to the state. That is nothing to be sad about - Sure we would have enjoyed playing in other games - but, Graves was very good and I do not think that anyone in the Region could have handled them better than we did. The sixteen region is still great - and that's that. Look out for next year.
