Russell was our representative in the state tournament. From the outcome of the regional tournament, they were the best we had to send to Lexington. At Rupp Arena, they represented not only Russell but also the other fifteen schools in the region. However, from many posts and from many comments on the street, it is obvious that many in this region were rooting against Russell. That is wrong. At tournament time we should put all of our petty squabbles and prejudices aside and pull for our repensentative. If we think that our neighbors are our "enemies" possibly we should look at how the rest of the Commonwealth views us. It isn't very positive and their remarks are aimed at all of our schools.

 

Next week our Rose Hill girls travel to Diddle Arena to play in their first state tournament. Sadly, we will make that trip knowing that many, if not most or all, of our neighbors will be hoping that Shelby County beats our girls- the worse the better. Does anyone doubt this?

 

All families fight. All of you with siblings and cousins understand that statement. Nonetheless, we pull together when "outsiders" become part of the "battle". We need to do the same in our "regional family". Personally, I am very disappointed that Russell lost but I know that they represented us to the best of their ability at that given time. They earned the right to be there on our behalf. I hope the majority of you feel the same.

 

As for the Governor's Cup, I completely agree with the posts of Frances and Theoldguy. That state championship will mean far more in the future than any athletic championship. I am not a "Russellite" but I am proud of the way they represented all of us on the field and floor of athletic competition and, far more important, in the halls of academic competition. In all cases, they brought positive recognition to our area and our area sure needs some positive recognition.

attention on the basketball forum. I suppose all I can say

is thanks from all of us, but this is the basketball forum, no

matter how you cut it. (I believe the Governor's Cup thread

still exists in the General Discussion forum.) Besides the

fact that it has been a good year for the Russell school

systems all around, I, along with most of the rest of the

team, would prefer to stay out of this thread, and keep this

one about basketball. (This includes all the snide remarks.)

 

Echoing what others have already said:

Am I proud of the basketball team? Most definitely. Do I

think they could have performed better? I certainly think

so. I thought this was true after the District final when

they lost in similar fashion. But once again, after this game

I still have not abandoned my support for the basketball

team and my optimism for next season.

I wish they would have played better, I wish they would have won, unfortunately they didn't and their performance will undoubtably cast a negative shadow until next season on the 16th Region. Until will get a better performance in the Sweet 16 this opinion will continue throughout the state. Hopefully a strong cast of returning players- for many area teams- will correct that view over the next several years. Regardless of our 16th representative in 2007 and 2008, IMO their performance will be better!!!

First off, Russell "earned" the right to represent the 16th because no one else in the 16th prevented them from taking the crown. They won their games that was in front of them and got to RUPP.

 

Any other team in the 16th would NOT have fared as well. Most people, inside our area and out in the state, knows that the 16th is way down in terms of talent and competitive teams. Just a fact. As for the Elliott County Lions and other thinking they would have represented better, it is extremely doubtful. At one point Elliott was down by a huge margin to Russell only to lose by 4. I saw Graves play and I have seen Elliott enough to know that Graves would have won by 40 plus over the Lions.

 

Stop knocking Russell when the other teams in the region would not have done any better than Russell at the state.

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. Russell definately earned their spot in Rupp and I'm glad for them. That said, I also believe there was other teams that would have gave a better showing. You have to get to the region first though. :cry:

I would say that Russell left you in the dust, as usual, academically and this year did the same in athletics.

but to make a ridiculous statement like the above shows either a too quick trigger on the keyboard or a distorted view of reality, or maybe both.
