Was it not what we expected?

Russell had problems with Greenup Co. earlier in the

season. Why? They held the ball for long periods of time

and played good sticky defense. What did Graves Co. do?

The exact same thing. What was the end result? The exact

same thing.

 

Russell quite simply didn't have an answer for #10 on the

perimeter defense and #54 inside. That was the difference.

(The early technical didn't help things either. That really

doomed any hope of early momentum, discussed later.)

 

With that being said, I think the team vastly underperformed

(understatement of the year candidate?). It was another

frustrating game - I think everyone in the stands could see

the Devils saying, "Here we go again..." After the first

quarter it was as if any and all momentum that Russell had

coming out of the region had been sapped away. But even

so there is probably no excuse for scoring 27 points in a

state tournament game.

 

Last comment: for all the shouts of "Fire Dodd," look back

hard on this season and you will discover not only did he

do something that hasn't happened at Russell in 34 years,

but he also did so after a series of bad happenings.

I am disappointed in, but certainly not surprised by, the reaction of the above Ashland posters. Last time I checked Russell won the Class AA state football championship, Russell won the Governor's Cup (again), Russell's boys won the 16th Region, Russell's girls won the 63rd District and reached the semi-finals of the 16th Region. What have your boys and girls accomplished lately, GIAT and gopack21? You are sending a revealing message about that "tradition". I would say that Russell left you in the dust, as usual, academically and this year did the same in athletics.

If you want to critique a members comments directed to "someone else" then thats your judgement

but to make a ridiculous statement like the above shows either a too quick trigger on the keyboard or a distorted view of reality, or maybe both.

 

Russell hasn't left Ashland "in the dust" in ANYTHING.

There is no way that Morgan, Rowan, Boyd, Ashland, Elliott, or Fairview would have been held under 30 pts....

WoodyJr, your defense of your school is noted. The only problem is that you, to no one's surprise, failed to back it up with any facts whatsoever. Now, I'm sure you are going to come back with a rather ancient history lesson. How about something current- like in the past couple of years? I obviously stand by my statements.

 

Actually, my purpose was not to take a shot at Ashland. Ashland is a good school- no better and no worse overall than most schools. My point was to point out the poor and pompous attitudes of some of your cohorts.

 

Russell's accomplishments, in athletics and in academics, are something that all of us should salute. They have earned our respect and admiration.

I'm pretty close to Gold Star on this one.

 

I won't go as far as to say "Who cares" or "So what", but I'm not going to hang my head from this, either.

 

I wasn't at the game, but after talking to a person that had an excellent seat, it seems that a couple of the Red Devils just couldn't get past the "Rupp" effect, and play the way they were capable of playing.

 

At any rate, like all of us, I wish that Russell had been able to play a much better game than they did - but as long as they gave effort and didn't quit, I'll live with the outcome.

 

As for the fact that they "layed an egg" at Rupp, I have to say this - they earned the right to represent us at the State Tournament. No one "gave" it to them, they took it.

 

Could some other team from the region have gone down and played better? Easy answer is yes. Everyone in our region knows that on any given night, any one of eight or nine teams could beat each other. All of that is a moot point though, because Russell won it where it counts - on the floor.

 

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for my money, my only regret is that Russell didn't come out on fire, beat Graves, and advance deep into the field.

 

As I said in my first post - congrats to Graves. As for Russell, hang in there, and know that this is just one more step on the big journey...

Congrats to coach Dodd and the Red Devils for making it to the sweet 16. Your one and done is no different from just about all other 16th region winners that go to Rupp, with a few exceptions through the years.

To bad for Russell. Good season.

A state title in football, the 1st region title in basketball in 34 years, and the most impressive is winning the Govenors Cup. The Russell Independent School System has A LOT to be proud of regardless of what some might say.

Ashland lost in the 1996 championship game to Paintsville.
