IMO MoCo's mascot has nothing to do with the issue. They invoked a tragic event in the name of school spirit. It would be the same issue to me had they been playing the Conner Cougars.

Sounds like the result will be a better education and hopefully an understanding about why the sign was so insensitive.

Not just a massacre, but also how the US government systematically stole forced Native Americans to relinquish 25 million acres of land and either forced them to assimilate and denounce their culture or move thousands of miles away to less desire able lands to maintain their identity and culture. It was a death march. 1000's died either by disease, at the hand of locals along the way who didn't want them passing through, or exposure to the elements as they were forced to set out during the worst time of year.

 

 

Definitely true; but keep in mind that many Native American tribes had been stealing land from one another, killing one another and enslaving one another (in other words, what the white man did to them) for many, many years before the white man ever stepped foot on this continent. We (today's society) use today's values in judging what took place a long, long time ago when values were quite different. That doesn't make the Indian Removal Act right, but it does help understand how and why it happened.

Harmless pranks always fill the week leading up to the annual match, but the tradition took a dark turn Tuesday when Tullahoma students found a bobcat shot and hanged on their football field. The Friday game will go on as scheduled.

These kids were not making fun of the real Indians that were forced to march "The Trail of Tears", so I say have at it. Too many sensitive folks these days. :ohbrother:

I'm with the opinion that it may have been a little much, but with that said they (schools with Native American mascots) do the tomahawk chop early and often so can a group really complain about that tragic event on a banner inbetween war cries and chops?? :idunno: Can it go both ways or should it be eithier all is fair in the spirit of competition or nothing provocative or disrespectful on both sides????

Remember that the student that was bothered was from GRC - not the Indian mascot school.

But I'm saying that any kind of Indian reference in a chant or a sign---tee pees, moccasins, feathers, etc---could be construed as offensive.

I agree with you in it being over the top and in poor taste. But sometimes (and this is no excuse but), the adults get caught up in rivalry games as much as the kids and may not have payed any attention to the sign or just thought it was in the spirit of competition. As sad as it sounds it happens.

 

I know our big rival is from a river town and let me tell Ya the signs can get pretty nasty (River rats, plastic rats taped to pics of bloody polar bears). Personally I don't condone that stuff but in that respect if no one with authority is saying anything about it from eithier side I say play on. But that my opinion only.

 

Usually it gets nipped in the butt quickly but not until the other team complains. Idk if this is comparative or not to the GRC sign but it's the closest Ive got.

I'm on BGP record multiple times saying any socioeconomic slam against a school and community is 100% out of bounds. CCH has crossed that line with Holmes in the past and I've written the school about it. Your "River Rats" example is a perfect example of what shouldn't be allowed.

I see both sides yes it is a problem when any opposing schools go to lengthy measures to belittle and disrespect each other. But I also feel ppl are getting soft and too sensitive and are ready to scream foul at the drop of a hat. No matter what this kinda stuff will go on and there's not much if anything the everyday fan can do about it besides write about it on here or call the schools and voice your concerns. I guess it comes with a grain of salt.

 

My dad used to tell me when I was a youngster not to "make a mountain out of a mole hill". Sometimes I think that saying can be used for most of these situations. Was the GRC sign over the top? Yeah. Disrespectful? Probally not. Consequences? Naaa play on.

 

In most rivalry situations it's more the norm than the exception. almost excepted

I remember my 1st 3 years at NewCath (girls came to the "hill" my Sr. year, for those that don't know) we used to get called "homo-hill".......no one had a :poop:-fit over it or lost any sleep over it.

 

I actually thought it was funny.
