October 24, 201411 yr "Student-athlete" is such an oxymoron in some of these programs. It was probably hyperbole, but I once was told Melvin Turpin(RIP) couldn't spell his name correctly three times out of five. College athletic programs are full of kids that couldn't spell "college," much less make passing grades in legitimate courses. Many of these so called "student-athletes" have no business whatsoever on a campus. Try teaching some of these dummies how to find the roots of a fifth degree polynomial when they can't even add 1/2 and 1/4 . I see it everyday. They are athletes pretending to be students. Desmond Allison(RIP) probably would have lost big-time on the game show "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? ". College athletics is a farce. I cringe everytime I hear a college administrator or NCAA talking head use the term "student-athlete." Are there some very good student-athletes ? Yes. But no one should be surprised when information like this at UNC comes to light. Edited October 24, 201411 yr by Science Friction
October 25, 201411 yr I really hope Cleveland State has their house in order. They could get the death penalty this time...
October 25, 201411 yr Does anyone think the NCAA will come down on them with proper punishment? This isnt a minor ordeal, yet the NCAA has made it look like one. In reality it is probably the largest scandal in collegiate history. 18+ years of "fake" classes to make sure athletes could been deemed academically eligible, primarily in basketball and football. To me that is a big deal and should be treated as such, yet up until the feds and national media started investigating it, the NCAA just swept it under the proverbial rug. So what's your take on it? Will the NCAA come down on them? If so, what do you think the sanctions will be? Also, what do you think the sanctions should be? Cmon man!!!! This is not the first university to have done this. Yes, it's in the open on them, but if the NCAA wants to do their homework, many more major universities would be just as guilty if not worse.

But no one should be surprised when information like this at UNC comes to light. That strictly depends on the University you decide to attend. There are some prestigious Universities that prefer to protect their academic standing and reputation over a 4 year stud athlete.
October 26, 201411 yr So I am standing in front of the UNC Marching Band at Martinsville Speedway today. I told a drummer, "You guys have large numbers. What are you, 300 strong?" He said, "we're really 700 but 400 have this as African Studies and they don't have to show up." :lol2: Got to hand it to them, the kids are handling it better than the adults.
October 27, 201411 yr Author Cmon man!!!! This is not the first university to have done this. Yes, it's in the open on them, but if the NCAA wants to do their homework, many more major universities would be just as guilty if not worse. Name one?
October 27, 201411 yr Name one? If we're going to be honest, there are probably "paper classes" at just about every college (targeted for athletes). Although they probably do exist, they're not nearly to the level of the UNC AFRI major/classes. With all things considered, Uconn was banned from the postseason for low APR schools. If the NCAA is going to be consistent to their "academics/student-athlete first model" this should be much worse. Here's an article on Mark Emmert's reaction. Don't know how he's exactly "surprised and disturbed" this info's been out for a pretty long period. Mark Emmert, NCAA president calls North Carolina report troubling - ESPN

October 28, 201411 yr I think it's a joke how much ESPN is silent when it comes to this scandal. They spend more time talking about the Georigia RB's signing of autographs for money than they have even mentioned this scandal. It's a joke.

I have heard Colin Cowherd saying that this should be considered very serious however. Not much from others though.
October 28, 201411 yr Author I doubt the head of ESPN is allowing them to run an actual story about it. The few that have mentioned it probably receive 10 lashes every time they mention it.
October 28, 201411 yr It will be really interesting to see how the NCAA handles this one. IMO, they tried to do nothing in hopes that all of this would just go away. Now that basically every major news outlet (other than ESPN) is all over the story, they've kind of had their hand forced. If they don't vacate wins and take down banners, the NCAA is basically accepting the fact that they no longer exist. If this doesn't warrant some type of severe punishment, absolutely nothing does. If they do vacate wins and take down banners, UNC has to go through the shame that they deserve and that many others have faced. I'm honestly fine with either option.

If NCAA doesn't nail them to the wall, they have zero grounds to do much of anything to anyone from here on out. Of course, consistency is the one thing most lacking with the NCAA.
