If I'm not mistaken, I think 1 if not 2 of those championship game officials was rated high enough by the KHSAA to be invited to officiate at Rupp next week. I know Bobby Hall was, and I think Billman was as well, but not for sure.

 

Bobby Hall will be calling a game at Rupp, not sure which one but it won't be Russell's because he's from the 16th. Billman was assigned to the girl's state tournament.

OK, I have read enough. I have no dog in this fight, but I have seen every game of the tournament and these officials did an outstanding job. There will always be some who see things differently, but they are usually looking through (insert your school colors here) glasses. These guys work their behinds off to do the best job they can and none of them care one bit who wins or loses a game. They call it as they see it and move on to the next game. Of course every official is going to miss one or two in a game (they are human afterall), but overall, the entire tournament was well officiated. Go to the 15th, 10th or 11th if you want to see some "homers", the 16th may not have the best officials in the state, but they are honest, professional and care about the kids.

Could someone enlighten me as to why there was a song on the radio playing every hour on the hour (102.9) I guess, singing about Elliott County going to Rupp???? Or something to that effect...?

 

I am clueless about this, as I did not hear it but numerous people have asked me if I heard it...surely to goodness they didn't do the ultimate jinx did they?

We were given a song that talked about them playing in the regional finals. Said nothing about Rupp. We played it once Saturday before the game on 102.3.

I too did not have a favorite team in the tournament or a "dog in the fight", but I know what a lousy official that the one that will be calling a game in Rupp is. This is the guy that wants to make sure everyone knows that he is there. The game is supposed to be about the kids and not the officials. You can tell a well officiated game when at the end no one notice's the officials.

If basketball teams play basketball the way you are supposed to play it you would not noticed the refs either. Play defense with your feet and quit trying to play with your hands and you won't get any cheap fouls out front. Work for position on rebounds and quit attempting to go through people or over them and you won't get the cheap fouls underneath. Dripple the ball when you move would definately reduce the number of walks. Dribble the ball properly and quick trying to imulate Allen Iverson and there wouldn't be any carries called.

 

It's hard enough to referee basketball, but when teams can't execute basic fundamentals, it makes it really hard to referee, and of course the referee is the bad guy for making the call.

 

This is not a statement about this particular game, just HS basketball in general.

Both officials are quality and very well respected among their peers and throughout the state.

Here's my take on the officiating of the Russell - Elliott Co game. You may recall that as the first half closed, Elliott was making a run and was only down 7 or 9 pts. One of their players was driving to the basket and the ball went out of bounds (could've been a foul on Russell). One ref (Bobby) called it out on Russell and another ref(?) came over and changed the call (which was correct because it went out on the Elliott player - right in front of me). That resulted in a possible 7 point swing because a) Elliott lost the ball and didn't score b)a technical was called and 3)Russell hit a 3 at the buzzer to go up 16. My opinion is that Bobby felt like that should have been Elliotts ball and it took Elliott out of the game so he took it upon himself to get them back in the game. That's the only reason that I can guess that he was as "blatantly" anti Russell in that 2nd half. I've watched him all year all the way up to that 2nd half and he has been a good official.

Except it wasnt Bobby that was making the big calls against Russell in the second half, Billman was calling the "obvious" ones. I think the walks were walks, and most of the fouls were probally fouls, it just seemed if Russell was fouling, Elliot was fouling even more, and if they hadnt gotten about 10 extra fouls intentionally at the end, it would have really looked bad, final foul count, Russell 27, Elliot 20. First game in history that Van Hoose and Blair fouled out together. Maybe just a coincidence. Lets just write it off to a bad game. If players can have them, so can Ref's and Russell is still going to Rupp. NO blood=No Foul!

This is a great post. I don't always agree with Play2Win but I will here. When a teams or teams are not playing fundamentally sound ball, it makes the officials job very very difficult. Games where the teams do play good solid basketball are games you don't notice officials. Ask just about any official and they will tell you that it is more difficult to officiate grade school games than it is to officiate JV or Varsity games, because of the players' lower skill levels. The better the teams play, the better the officials SEEM to be. It is only perception because the officials are the ones who have to "clean it up", and that makes the job of officials very difficult.
