I understand what you're trying to say but it's not working.

Now you are talking about how CCH can afford to give numerous scholarships out every year to cover the 8K tuition costs while other public schools can't even afford to have many things needed.

I'm happy for CCH, they applied and were afforded the grant. The Bengals are the ones I am disappointed in for not doing their research if they feel CCH is more deserving than many other schools.

This! And happy I'm not. I want that money for my school's field. Who wouldn't?

Just keep reading on to posts 63 and 66.

(And for the record, there are PLENTY of low-income homes in Park Hills. Not all of Park Hills is Cleveland Avenue and Emerson Road. Check out some of the section 8 apartments around town.)

There is also Section 8 in Ft. Thomas. Just sayin'

Conduits were installed when they initially installed the field turf at Wooten Stadium years ago.

If I'm not mistaken, the current plans for the stadium renovation call to have some of the light towers mounted directly to the new grandstand they are working on obtaining funding for. Their current capital campaign at Cov Cath also includes a 4-classroom addition onto the building that is prioritized before the stadium renovations, as it should be. The stadium renovations aren't going to be happening until the classroom addition is fully funded, and $200K isn't going to do the trick. I can't imagine that this money won't be going, more or less completely, to the stadium turf replacement.

There is just one problem, I have been told that there is a time limit on the money.

CovCath can not wait to spent the money, I heard the project must be under way by next July. which is one year after the money was granted. Also remember that most of the expense in turf fields is in preparing the sub-grade which does not have to be done , $200,000 will cover the cost of a new turf.

It is obvious that you no nothing about the sacrifices parents make to sent there kids to private school.

I know plenty and I met no insult to those who do, but I also know that most those kids and families have a job, and two parents, and roof over there head and meal in their belly. If you don't see my side maybe it is you that knows nothing about the challenges in certain low income or impoverished areas. Give me a break man.

I think by district St. Augustine parish is considered to be Holy Cross territory these days (may well have been when you attended Cov Cath as well), but that's my point exactly. There may be a good number of kids who grew up in Vanilla Hills walking the halls of Cov Cath, but that doesn't mean there aren't kids that grew up living next to Goebel Park doing the same.

I grew up just a basketball shot away from Goebel Park and attended Cov Cath. When I attended there was a significantly less amount of inner-city kids attending than there had been when my older brother had attended 10 years before, but still a moderate hand full.

I admittedly now am unaware of just what the current percentage of inner-city kids attending is and lean towards thinking that it might even be much less than when I attended, but in truth I really don't have anything to base that guess on, and could be terribly mistaken with my assumption.

I'd be interested in knowing though, and would probably be surprised if I found that number to be larger than my assumption.

What you mentioned about the football player from Philadelphia St. is very interesting to me. I'm digging in my memory banks trying to figure who that was. If you feel at liberty to say who, I'd love to know. Pretty cool tidbit of trivia.

I just read the 1st post to the wife, after her rant she asked what ex Bengals kid goes there? I said Joe Walters lol

All I have to say is Bengals really dropped the ball here. No one can convince me a private school with Field Turf field already deserves the help more than another school etc.

Not impressed with the Bengals on this one at all

If there is anyone in BC that could organize a Bengal Boycott it is you! Just take the funds that people would normally spend on Bengal tickets and start a fund for facility improvements. Then once you are organized, contact the media and let them know what you are doing. I see this as a cause three schools could rally behind. Imagine the press coming into Cooper any everybody is in Steeler attire!

Would've been nice to see it go to a public school

Someone correct me if wrong, but didn't Campbell Co get their new field this way just a year or two ago?

While I was at Cov Cath, I played football with two offensive linemen who came from low income. One grew up in the St. Joseph Apartments at the top of St. Joseph Lane in Park Hills (look 'em up....they're government assisted housing units). Another grew up on Philadelphia Street in Covington. He went on to get a football scholarship to Georgetown and he's a physicist now. I also graduated with a guy who lived on West Watkins in Covington, and I was in the wedding of a Cov Cath classmate who grew up on Ludford in Ludlow. He went to Xavier University on a full ride for art. There was also a baseball player in my class who lived on Butler Street in Ludlow - I found out where he lived during the '97 Ohio River Flood when Cov Cath organized volunteers from the school to go help his family and the neighboring families move their belongings out before they were overtaken by the Ohio River.

Now, I went to school with about 110 other guys who DIDN'T come from those neighborhoods or income levels, but I'll be damned if those fellas didn't appreciate the money their families got from Cov Cath to help them make tuition. How does Cov Cath, a not-for-profit organization, come by the money to help students like them with tuition? Grant money.

I'll be here all week.

Not trying to start anything here, but all the low income buddies you mentioned were athletes. Do they award scholarships to others? I guess, what warrants a scholarship to Cov Cath.

Wasn't aware if that is the case

Scholarships are financial need based, I'm sure. Athletics doesn't have anything to do with it.

Financial aid is doled out based on financial need through a national clearinghouse. All parochial schools in N Ky handle it this was as far as I know.

There is no more consideration given to athletes than anyone else. Your either eligible or your not based on financial need.

My guess is if they can't play sports it's tougher to get the scholarship money. I have nothing to base that on, other than my opinion. I believe Ncc does the same thing.

So who evaluates these 8th graders to determine whether he is a good enough athlete to warrant scholarship money? :idunno:
