All you can eat tacos deemed offensive

As somebody who attended grade school in central Ohio, I can assure you that there were and probably are still many Buckeyes who were surprised to learn that most Kentuckians owned and wore shoes. For years, the same people had donated their smelly old shoes so that we poor hillbillies would not go shoeless. Used book drives were also quite popular so that we might learn to read a little bit.

Blacks and Hispanics are not the first groups of people to have suffered from stereotypes in this country. When camera crews and Washington politicians visit eastern Kentucky, they almost always look for toothless hillbillies who live in the deepest hollows and fit their stereotype. The media likes to pretend that racism only exists among whites and that stereotypes only impact people of color and those who are attracted to the same sex.

Kentuckians know that the Dukes and Boss Hogg are purely fictional but there are tens of millions of people in this country who will never visit the rural South in person. There was nothing unfair about my comparison.

Again, I never said that stereotype doesn't exist, and I agree, there are plenty of groups that get stereotyped, and it's not just minorities. I just don't think the Dukes of Hazard is necessarily a good example of the Hillbilly stereotype. The Duke boys are good looking, charming, heroes, that always win and outsmart the bad guys. When you think typical "hillbilly", the Duke boys don't come to mind.

I don't totally disagree with any other part of your post.

I understand being offended by ethnic stereotypes but I don't understand why people are so quick to move to eliminate the stereotypes. I find stereotypes of hillbillies offensive, yet hillbillies host a Hillbilly Days festival and Dukes of Hazzard has consistently been among the top rated re-runs in eastern Kentucky.

I would much rather live in a society where I can feel offended by behavior than to live one where other people try to shield me from activities that might offend me.

If you are offended by All You Can Eat Taco nights, then don't go to All You Can Eat Taco nights. If it makes you feel better, encourage your friends and family to join your boycott. Just don't try to dictate somebody else's legal behavior by demanding that they behave differently.

How would those hillbillies that host Hillbilly Days feel if an organization that isn't a stereotypical hillbilly put on their own Hillbilly Days event and mocked them in the process? What if some black people decided to host a Hillbilly Day and totally mocked all Hillbillies? Is that cool?

Not cool but it is still a relatively free country and that is much more important than protecting people from being offended.

I agree. Just saying that I understand why people would be offended.

A sorority having an all you can eat taco deal sounds more sexist, then racist.:sssh:

Thank God it wasn't a seafood buffet.

I agree. Some groups of people are offended much easier than others.

I think it has more to do with the liberal mantra on college campuses….I'm not saying it isn't in good taste, or possibly even stereotypically racist….but the offended tend to more prevalent in and on college campuses. Enlightening of the minds and all

I don't understand why this is a problem. Are we going to ban all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets now?

I hope not. Ru would starve to death.

My take, we all need to get over ourselves!

No way, man. I'm of Irish decent. Dressing up your kids like a Leprechauns, Lucky Charms, Fighting Irish, fields of clover, and Pots of Gold are offensive to me.

The All You Can Eat Bangers and Mash and all You Can Drink Guinness charity events on St. Patricks Day are going down.

I'm of the opinion that the Boss Hogg character is spot-on and perfectly depicts the good-ol' boy county judge-exec type. Many of those dinosaurs still wield great power in their little podunk fiefdoms, and it has a lot to do with why we have twice as many counties as we need in this state.

:lol2::lol2::lol2: That's magically delicious!

Well, let me eat all the tacos I can, and ride in the car with me back home. I can almost guarantee you will be offended!;)
