May 6, 201412 yr Marty & Brantley are a great combination IMO. In some ways they remind me of Verne Lundquist & Bill Raftery.
May 6, 201412 yr Marty & Brantley are a great combination IMO. In some ways they remind me of Verne Lundquist & Bill Raftery. I would tend to agree. I don't mind when they talk about other things either, just don't think Brantley is as good as some others that you hear. I am not big on Brantley yet but he is starting to grow on me.
May 6, 201412 yr None of them really bother me nor do I go out of my way to listen to anyone specific. Baseball is a little different than football or basketball as there is a lot of down time.
May 7, 201412 yr I enjoy Brantley's schtick, which is what I didn't necessarily bargain for when he signed on. I did know when he signed on, however, that we would be getting a very knowledgeable analyst whose work at ESPN impressed me. He is out of his comfort zone doing PBP and also doing the tradeoffs with Marty, but he's steadily improved at it.
May 7, 201412 yr I can't say there are any that I hate. Grande's use of first names and nicknames is irritating but I wouldn't say I hate him as an announcer. Thom's negative rants are more irritating than Grande's nicknames but I still don't hate him. I didn't care much for Paul Keels or Steve Physioc. Johnny Bench talked too much. Casey is still trying to figure it out so I'll cut him some slack. I think Dan Hoard is a great announcer but I don't remember him doing Reds games. For my favorites, I'll go with: 1. Marty 2. Joe 3. Brantley
May 8, 201412 yr My first three years of following the Reds, Al Michaels did the broadcasts with Joe. I thought there was nothing like them. I even wrote Al a letter once when I was eight. It started with, "Dear Owl..."
May 9, 201412 yr I thought the Bad Boy Steve Stewart was okay. I do not particularly care for Jim Kelch. I like Tom Brenneman more on the radio rather than on TV.
May 9, 201412 yr I realize I'm in the minority but I LOVE me some George Grande. I don't think announcers provide a whole lot to a broadcast if you know how to watch a game. So, I like my announcers to be likeable. George is certainly that. Plus he still has an old-school 40s/50s charm to him when calling a game. For many of the same reasons I like when Sean Casey does a game. It's not life and death and he brings joy to the broadcast. Marty is getting tiresome for me.
May 9, 201412 yr I like Thom when he does national broadcasts, he's petty dang good. But when he dos the local Reds one his negativity is really annoying. I think he is part of the problem with Reds fans being so critical with the team, year in and year out. I love Brantley, hes perfect for the color commentator role. If Chris Welsh didn't say some of the stupid things he does then he'd be ok. Marty is the role model for his son, so his negativity is getting old as well, but if a big play happens there is nobody better to listen to.

Remember him in the Dunn/Griffey days, "and that's gonna beeeeeeeee gone!" Loved it haha.

I have never really understood the dislike for Grande and Welsh. They are both as knowlegeable about the game and its history as anyone. Yes, Grande will utter the same cliches over and over every game and will misjudge a fly ball as often as Kevin Mitchell, but that's kinda part of his appeal. He's just too nice to dislike. He clearly loves the game of baseball.
May 9, 201412 yr Agree 100%. Remember him in the Dunn/Griffey days, "and that's gonna beeeeeeeee gone!" Loved it haha. And the great call on Griffy's 500th, "HEY!" Gotta love George.
May 12, 201412 yr I was raised on Michaels and Nuxhall, and Marty and Nuxhall. I've never heard any other Reds announcers.
May 12, 201412 yr I stayed up many a night listening to Waite Hoyt and Jack Moran . Jack Moran called Reds games? I remember him on Channel 9.
