The playoff system is already watered down enough with allowing 4 teams per district in. It should only be the 1st and 2nd place teams in the playoffs. Anymore than that is ridiculous to me.

Football regular season is more meaningful than all other sports in Kentucky. Every football team does not advance to the post season unlike every other sport.

There is just too much disparity in the state. The "haves" of 50 years ago, are still today...the "have nots", still the same.

 

...obviously there are a few or so that buck that trend, but for the most part, things are the same.

 

Demographics just play such a huge, huge, huge role. Not a popular thing to say or admit, but it's fact.

 

Some states, like Oklahoma have finally acknowledged this and have classed accordingly due to these factors. Iam4thecats could fill us in more on this.

Harry brings up an interesting point about demographics. In NKY we have a Holmes football team that can't get out of its own way most years but the basketball team is amazing most years. Highlands has been known to play some decent football but their basketball team hasn't been anything to crow about most years.

It appears Oklahoma has changed their system. However I found some other interesting states. Illinois enforces a 1.65 multiplier on any non-boundaried school. In Minnesota, a reverse multiplier is used, which is based on the number of students in a school activity program and who are registered for free or reduced lunch. I believe Indiana added a success penalty in 2012.

The thing about Oklahoma that Harry was talking about was very interesting. If a school had open enrollment of any kind they had a multiplier put on them. If a school was located in a metro area near a 6A school they had a multiplier put on them. Last but not least free and reduced lunch and certain other special education category kids were counted something like .5 or.75.

No disrespect, but I find the regular season to be extremely meaningful. I'm sure my sons did too when they played. Wanting to win every game regardless of the impact on the playoffs was meaningful to them. Plus winning the district games had a big impact on whether you stayed at home the first two playoff games. If we have to play CovCath in the playoffs, I sure like it being at Highlands, which means the regular season game against them is HUGE.

So you would of had no problem with Trinity not getting in the playoffs last year?

I only say this because if you have to win half or more than half your games to get into the playoffs then that pretty much deters coaches from scheduling tough games.

 

KHSAA has screwed up the playoffs by the way they created districts. There really can't be a fair way of doing the playoffs until they fix the districts and quit creating 3 team districts which is the dumbest thing ever thought up.

 

The only way I could justify a team making the playoffs without being .500 or better is if they win their district outright...

"Success penalty" is just foolish. Let's penalize a team for doing well ................but not really penalize them by not letting them in the playoffs.......lets just move them up a class where they can eliminate some different teams for awhile.

I just made this thread to see what everybody's opinion was, mine personally is that every team should be able to make it. I feel that is what is best for the kids. Raising them as winners creates a winning atmosphere for them in life. Just because they may lose in the first round (likely big sometimes) doesn't mean that they shouldn't get to make the playoffs. The kids will still play and find meaning to the regular season. Everybody wants a district championship.

I'd say the quick and strong opinions may be because this topic has been debated to death on here in the past. I'd guess there are probably somewhere between 5 and 10 threads where this has been discussed in great length.

Two points:

 

1) Every team is able to make the playoffs, by winning the games they need to to get there

 

2) Raising kids as winners has nothing to do with winning games of sport, it has to do with parenting.

 

There is absolutely no good reason to have any "special setup". In most classes and many districts it's bad enough already.

 

Please don't confuse participation in playoffs with creating winners….it's not a reality. Good luck baiting the rest of hooks.

I'm sure the topic has been debated to death and it will continue to be debated to death but I am new here and eager to discuss it. And as for raising the kids as winners, at least 0-10 teams can say they made the playoffs and had a chance to win. Regardless of how much better their opponent is, they still have a chance to pull a massive upset in the first round regardless!

Kids should have to actually earn things. It is this kind of T-ball mentality that is leading to downfall of our society. Just showing up for an interview, doesn't mean you will get a job. What life lesson would be taught by allowing all teams regardless of record into the playoffs?
