Bo Schuh Gets Slammed

Featured Replies

Let me first say I love the aggressiveness of Bo boxing out. Wish we had more players that played with that fire.

My next comment is more of a general comment about AAU. Why is it that when the kids transition from HS ball where touch like fouls were called to AAU where hardly anything seems to be called? Most of the same officials are working in the AAU ranks but it seems like from the player stand point only the strong are going to survive. How do kids adjust from HS to AAU and then back to HS where it seems more touch like fouls are going to be called.

Would love to know what others think about this.

I have always suspected that the lack of fouls called in AAU vs school ball is due to the fact that many games are crammed into a short amount of time on numerous courts and if one game runs long it throws a major kink in the whole day. You have teams waiting to play, teams who may need to load up in a van and get to another venue for their next game, having to hold up games waiting on refs who were officiating the game that went long etc..

The second clip looked like the Schuh kid just fell down. 1st kid should have been ejected.

Agree completely. First clip looked like a wrestling takedown, guy should have been out of the game. 2nd clip, guy just moved and Bo lost his balance cause his center of gravity was so far behind him he couldn't catch himself when the guy moved. Sure what it looks like from this clip anyway. Has happened to me a few times. How the kid in the 2nd clip was whistled for a foul I'm not sure unless something happened that I just can't see.

AAU usually has multiple games waiting. Refs have a mind set of get the games done on time. (My experience at less competitive level)

The first should've been a technical foul. The second should have been a no call.

I am guessing Bo was in black? First clip the kid in white should have been ejected. Second clip it seems he just fell down.

Second clip looked like the kid he was boxing out did a swim move on him. Looked on purpose also. Schuh may have lost his balance but he had help based on what I saw.

The first clip was a legit takedown, the second clip was a no call.

The first play is as dirty of a play as I have seen in a long time. The kids should have been ejected, without a doubt. Absolutely no room for that.

It is tough to discern what exactly happened in the second video. I watched it several times and did not see anything unusual; however, it is possible that the big kid put an elbow to Bo's neck. Tough to tell from that video.

Let's talk about this level of boxing out. I saw it several times in the regional - CCH players boxing out to the extent they were running backwards and pushing the player they were boxing out 10 feet or more away from the basket. I see that as no different than if the player being boxed out pushes the guy boxing him out under the basket in order to get a rebound. Boxing out is one thing. Rooting and pushing a guy 10 feet while boxing out is another. The tough thing for a ref is if the guy being boxed out is backing up to try and get away from the box out and the player boxing out is trying to keep in contact so the guy doesn't get around him, how do you tell if it is excessive force by the player boxing out or not?

Technically, when your box out moves (displaces) a player it should be called a foul. You will never see it called though.

When my brother and I coached together we put a $20 bill out before each game and told the players it was their's if they got a foul called on them for boxing out too hard. No one ever earned the money, and believe me, they were trying.

I agree. I have never seen it called. But if players are getting pushed out of bounds by a box out, don't be surprised if you see a foul called on it in the near future. If I were coaching against Schuh, I would be working the refs on it before the game even started.

Discounting your exaggeration of "10 feet or more" your overall point is correct. As Ennam said the rule says that displacing a player is a foul. Many coaches do not realize that. I HAVE seen it called and I've seen the coaches (good coaches ) say "What? That's what we teach!"

I would argue you will not see that foul called very often for one simple reason. Kids simply do not block out anymore.

As to this particular play the first foul warrants an ejection. It's no different than throwing a punch IMO.

It's the responsibility of the official under the basket. He has the first two blocks on his side. It appears he may have been watching the ball to see if went in. That's a no-no. He has zero reason to be watching the ball.

I didn't see anything in the second clip, looked like he more lost his balance while boxing out. First clip kid should have been tossed.

2nd that......and a meeting in the hallway after the game as well. :sssh:

If that kid did that takedown to my son and he didnt get up and punch him in the chops I would yank him off the court. Absolutely no excuse for that kind of gutless takedown. At some point you have to stand up for yourself.
