You sure these folks aren't transplanted Cincinnatians? With the way Cincy runs things in their city and the crazy politics, not that KY is really that much better, maybe those folks decided to move south. No one I know says they are from Cincy. :lol2:

Maybe those folks think you don't know where Covington, Newport or NKY is. Maybe my family is an exception.

I have always enjoyed asking people where they are from. If it's a town I'm not familiar with, I'll ask what part of the state or what city it's close to.

If I lived in Northern Kentucky, I might say Northern Kentucky...or Cincinnati...perhaps depending on how far I was from home at the time.

Not sure bias has a whole lot to do with it. To me it would be an "easy" thing: whatever is easier....

When I visit my cousin, who lives in Boone County, and we travel around the area stores, gas stations, golf courses, etc, most of the people I hear talking sound the same as the accents in Cincinnati. There's definitely not a country or southern dialect like one would hear in nearly every other region of the state. I believe if you polled Northern Kentuckians and asked which they consider themselves, Northerners or Southerners, they would check "Northerner".

I grew up in NKY thinking I didn't have a southern dialect . Then I moved to to Michigan for work and ever customer I have asks me where in the south am I from . I do agree with UKM there are a lot of differences from NKY and the rest of the state . I could see it and hear it playing multiple sports across the state . NKY does have a lot more similar with Cincy than the rest of the state. But I personally always tell people I'm from KY and always considered myself southern . I love my bourbon , basketball, and horse racing. I'm as Kentucky as they come .

 

But talking about downstate bias, from a personal experience I had playing in Paintsville I think the bias is 100% real.

I'd say a majority of the non-affiliated attendees of the Sweet 16 aren't from NKY so why would they root for an NKY team? I think the Sweet 16 crowd generally hates Louisville first and NKY second. Everybody else gets love. That's your own fault though. Be more engaging and less about where you are from and maybe people will accept you more.

Huh? Maybe I'm missing your point. I had no idea there was so much hate for the northern part of the state. So everybody hates the two largest contributing areas of taxes to the state? I'm proud to be part of the state of Kentucky. I love to visit each "region". There's a sign, can't remember if it is on a bridge or an interstate highway that says "gateway to the south". I think it's also on a shoulder patch of each Covington police officer. Plus I would never disown a part of Kentucky. Why I'm just as proud to visit with folks from Monkey's Eyebrow as I would be to visit folks from Sugartit.

I have actually heard KHSAA refs from far western regions refer to Beechwood and Highlands both as private schools..."and, you know, most schools around here just aint gonna beat those NKY private schools because they (fill in the blank)".

 

The radio announcers preach this exact same quote every year during the state football finals. Johnson Central p.a. announcer would always say "first down Catholics", during the CCH games. There is a Ky High School basketball documentary that was on KET last year, it showed the 2002 Ryle team at the Sweet 16, the opposing coach's pre game speech (paraphrasing) was to beat the kids with money because they live close to the airport, so you know they have money. I still do know what that means.

 

When UK won the 2012 title, Cal went from "Pikeville to Paducah" on the trophy tour in a bus,to show appreciation to fans, It never come close to us.

 

I love my Woodford, Ale 8, and my Mingua beef jerky. Keeneland is one of the greatest places on earth to me. I am proud to say that I am from Union, KY, we do have a beautiful state. Thanks for everybody's input so far, this was my first thread. We are going to have a great Sweet 16!

I've never sensed the hate for NoKy like there is for Louisville. It's more apathy or perhaps ambivalece than anything.

I can vouch for NKY being a good time. I met many BGPers and had a great time when Boyle traveled to Highlands. I also always have a good time whenever my wife and I travel to Cincy as well. I'd love to live in NKY if my job had a location there. Just a great area and my kind of people.

You are right on about the opposing coachs comments, that would have Warren Central, he must have been talking about Triple Cown,,LOL,,as far as Cal,,,,who gives a rats behind anyway..
