Is there a bias against NKY teams down state?

Featured Replies

Wrong

Are you saying that Northern Kentuckians don't have a different dialect than most other sections of Kentucky? I disagree.

On the last point I made, whether they would check themselves as 'Northerners' or 'Southerners', I said I believe most would check Northerner, but on that I could possibly be wrong. That was just a guess on my part.

But there's no doubt in my mind that the accents in that area are very different from most of the state.

There's no question about that. Accents differ wildly around the state. That being said, for someone from Michigan all twangy accents sound the same.

To the other point, they wouldn't check "Northerner" so much as "Midwesterner." (Although technically it should be "Mideasterner." Colorado is in the middle of the west of this country.)

Strictly speaking for the Sweet 16, I don't think NKY teams are ever going to be anyone's sweethearts for all the reasons already mentioned. I do think though, that most neutral observers will half root for CovCath just because of the crazies. I've seen that happen before, whether it happens this year, I have no clue.

But, i don't think there's a bias toward NKY in regards to the tournament itself.

Subject does remind of a time in college when I was dating a girl from extreme EKY. Classes ended and we both went home for the summer. When I visited her that summer, it was obvious there was very definitely a bias against me amongst her friends (especially her male friends) and to a degree from her family. I got that "ya ain't from around here are ya boy," look A LOT.

Of course on her trips to visit me, I'm sure everyone in NKY treated her perfectly and no one looked at her crosseyed because of her accent. :lol2:

There is a Ky High School basketball documentary that was on KET last year' date=' it showed the 2002 Ryle team at the Sweet 16, the opposing coach's pre game speech (paraphrasing) was to beat the kids with money because they live close to the airport, so you know they have money. I still do know what that means![/quote']

The coach was Tim Reilly (I think) from Warren Central. Reilly used to be on the Holmes staff, as I recall.

OMG! I have lived south of river by no more than 3 miles my whole life, and if you travel another mile south, the dialect changes drastically. It really is crazy how much it changes and the way people are perceived.

BTW, no way, no how I say I am from Cincy! Never! Ever!

Same here, unless of course I were to remove all turn signals from my car and drive only in the left hand lane either A. right on someone's tail, or B. 10 MPH under the speed limit whilst having a cell phone conversation, smoking a cigarette, and drinking a beer. Then I would be considered an Ohio driver and I'd be cool w/ being from Cincy.

I always preferred State At Large.

That's an old football term. Your showing your age there. You used to have a 4A Louisville Champ a State at Large Champ and they played each other for the overall state champ.

I'm sorry, but in today's world, I fail to understand the whole idea of bias toward anyone because of geography, accent, race, gender, etc. That makes no sense to me. I know I sometimes struggle with someone who has values, beliefs, and morals that differ from me, but I am open minded and trying to be better. Everyone deserves our respect as being one of God's children.

Typical Kenton Co. Hippy:whistling:

1. There is definitely a bias against NKY and Louisville from the rest of the state. That is not in question.

2. NKY'ers think their stuff doesn't stink. Also not in question. :lol2:

I've lived in Northern Kentucky for most of my life, with a brief stint in Cincinnati. I always tell people that I'm from Northern Kentucky, which is essentially a suburb of Cincinnati.

I disagree with UKMF that Northern Kentuckians want to be left alone and/or considered part of Cincy. With that said, many NKY'ers work in Cincy. Personally, I don't consider myself a Cincinnatian, but I certainly live in Greater Cincinnati.

I do think that the rest of Kentucky views NKY as part of Ohio, much like Ohio views Cincinnati as part of Kentucky and/or somewhere else. I've always thought this plays a huge role in the lack of urgency for the new Brent Spence Bridge.

2. NKY'ers think their stuff doesn't stink. Also not in question. :lol2:

Says the Louisville guy...

Don't kid yourself, that ends at the Kentucky/Tennessee boarder. :lol2:

From my own personal experiences it ends at Bowling Green.

So you agree, we're pretty darn awesome up here....:D :lol2:
