Mike Listerman

His last few years at CovCath were ugly, and it was the CovCath "faithful" that were flogging him the hardest.

Fair points.

I'd add it was "only" the CovCath faithful.

Let me guess....he didn't play the "right kids" and parents made sure he paid?

Had nothing to do with "little Johnny's" playing time.

It was about the head coach loosing the control/respect of the players.

It went on too long, it was time for a change.

When Mike left people still respected him but his action over the past few years towards the CCH coaching staff & players is causing people to reconsider what Mike L is all about.

When I think of Listerman, I think of:

- the picture of him at Rupp with his arms around 2 of his kids who were crying

- the stories of him being a great teacher in the classroom

- the stories of him volunteering his time to the school for things like football games

^ This is the Coach L who taught me, and the Coach L that I was very fond of while I was at Cov Cath, and whom I always stopped to chat with at Cov Cath football games. He absolutely was that person.

After speaking with more than a handful of students who attended Cov Cath in his final years there, several students who played basketball for him in his final years there, and a small handful of teachers who taught with him in his final years there, I learned that, very unfortunately, the Coach L who taught and coached at Cov Cath for the last 4 or 5 years that he worked there was not the same one that I had known.

To quote a longtime coworker of Coach L's at Cov Cath, "Sometimes people just need a change of scenery when it comes to their job. Unfortunately for Mike, he desperately needed that change a good while before it took place."

Big game Friday. Wonder if he will get in the face of the Highlands coach??

Now that is funny! :lol2:

Not a good week to be Mike Listerman, I'd say.

Don't know anything about what has happened. I have seen Coach L on the sidelines for many years. I have always respected his teams and the work he does. We all have days that things go different than what we want. Lets on judge a person or career by a bad day.

Coach L. Is one heck of a guy.

I had coach for class twice and he was my home room teacher too. To say that all he cares about is winning isn't fair at all. I honestly feel that Coach L is one who genuinely cared about his students too. I mean, he took the last two weeks of class senior year to talk about life with our class. He absolutely cared.

I agree with everything you say as far as what he did in the past. He taught me the same life lessons 2 decades ago as well, and it was much appreciated and I thank him for that.

That being said, he is out of sorts right now. He needs to get it together.

Why not? He is an assistant coach on arguably the regions best team and he gets to coach against his son this Friday. Sounds like it's all good in the Listerman family right now. Well, except for all the haters.

Listen, my daughters boyfriend at the time played for Coach L and he and other players that came by the house frequently had nothing but great things to say about him. I think it's more on the parents than anything. Kinda just like when the PHM ran Brossart out. Some parents couldn't swallow that the fact that maybe their kids just weren't talented enough to win. Hence why Brossart was fired.

That's just my two cents worth. Figured I could contribute since he taught me at Highlands back in the day. I have an enormous amount of respect for Coach Listerman. I just hope he doesn't win Friday!

Wait, wait, wait.

Let me get this straight.

Are you implying that Coach Listerman lost his way at Covington Catholic in his final years that, but still landed the first lieutenant job at the school that'd recently owned his former team in a role that he no doubt considers semi-retirement?

Are you implying that maybe outsiders wouldn't see Coach Listerman, the guy volunteering to take up football tickets and run raffles on a Saturday morning at football games, but who still, despite all his success, essentially got axed by what some claim to be parents, is unfit to be the second in charge at Holmes? If so, why hasn't some 9th Region ref run him yet?

Booher is no fool. He's a great coach whose won a state tittle at a Class A school. If it were that great a problem, I don't think Coach L would be back next year. I also think that Booher would have probably reigned him in by now as well. I'll trust their judgment.

Both Booher and Listerman have a solid history as far as I'm concerned.

Someone could possibly email the KHSAA if they feel otherwise tho... :idunno:

BINGO!

I'm an idiot. This whole time I was thinking we were talking about Coach Listerman at Highlands. I kept thinking you all were nuts thinking he was tied to Pendelton County. I also have been confused regarding the "Big Game " on friday. IT is like a light just came on.

I never discourage healthy dialogue, but am I the only one getting a little uneasy with this thread? Coach Listerman himself may not care what other folks say about him online but the young men whom he currently coaches are, well, young men. I assume they can access this material and I worry that they may have some trouble processing it.

Your daughter once dated a CovCath basketball player who had great things to say about Listerman. From that you conclude it was the parents who not only ran off Listerman, but Brossart as well?

That's a big leap. Suffice it to say, it was time for a change in both programs.

That being said, I wish nothing but the continued success for Listerman and Brossart in their coaching careers.
