Proposed Bill Would Allow KS Teachers to Spank Kids Harder

Featured Replies

Spanking or paddling has no place in school for many reasons. First it does not deter behavior in many, it opens up litigation city and for a teacher is not worth the hassle. The lines drawn would be so varied, you would never agree. Just don't do it. There are other means. I have always thought consequences should be as natural as possible. Now that isn't always possible, but can be in a lot of cases.

One strategy when I caught students using profanity was have them call their parents and tell them the exact words they said. 100% of the time the kid did it and they were absolutely mortified to do it and almost every time the parent let them have it. I called the parent BTW and handed the phone to the kid. Way before cell phones were in all students' hands.

There are ways. If my kids would have had to call me in that instance, they would have rather gotten a paddling. I suspect that is the case with most.

I know there are outliers, but these types of strategies work.

Terrific strategy by the way. However, had that been in my home as a student, and I had to say those things over the phone to my mother who was a homemaker, I'd have gotten the whippin' when dad got home. So, either way, the spanking was a deterrent. If folks are fine with the parent doing it in lieu of a school person of whatever capacity, I guess I agree with that. But I'm all for the corporal punishment as deterrent. I'm living testament that it works. My sons are as well.

I'd sign up for it in a blink. If he needed it, let him have it.

Agreed.

In the 5th grade Mr. Stanley's paddle was split down the middle. Every time he landed a swat it pinched. Got my last paddling when I was a junior in high school. I think I turned out OK.

However, I learned from my own children, discipline depends on the receiver. I had a nephew in my charge that did not respond to spankings, but would tremble at the site of an egg timer. He hated timeouts, especially the way Mrs. S and I conducted them.

Doesn't eliminate you fom anything, I value your opinion, just wanted a frame of reference.

Thanks Lipton.

Honestly I was spanked as a child and didn't love it at the time. But looking back I see how it helped mold me. The consequence taught me discipline. To each their own.

You're straight comedy. Really. Taliban GOP. Is that what you've resorted to? I've actually enjoyed some of your posts from time to time, but when you show your true colors, you're so hard to take seriously. Sad really.
I'd go with pathetic rather than sad.

You older guys who apparently went to school where paddling was so strong there were no discipline issues obviously went to a different school than I did. They paddled. Kids still tried to punk a teacher. Kids still got in fights. Kids still did a lot of stupid things.

I often say our memories of the good ol' days are being seen through rose-colored lens.

I'd say kids are always going to do those things. But the incidents were nipped in the BUTT (not bud). They ended there. You act as if that guaranteed no juvenile behavior. Not at all true and for you to imply that is absurd.

I am saying that behavior is always going to be an issue. Ways has been. Any increase in problems IMP has nothing to do with paddling or lack thereof. Discipline ALWAYS ties back to the home.

Paddling at school isnt going to fix that AND isnt worth the issues associated with teachers who lack restraint.

When has teacher restraint been a front page item when it comes to paddling? Did I miss that story? Or are we just assuming it's an issue? It's getting your arse busted for screwing up. We make it seem like teachers are out there whackin kids upside the head with a paddle out there. Why not go next door, get the teacher in the room beside you to witness the paddling? A system of check and balance when delivering punishment.

No. We are in a retarded litigious society and schools don't want to travel that worn path and I don't blame them one bit.

I was spanked and often think of strapping C4 to my chest and taking out some innocents.

Innocents? I think the term you're looking for is infidels!

Both.

The problem with teachers doing the paddling is that kids are more rude today than ever. What happens? SOME teachers will get really upset when a punk says something to them and it offends them. You now have an upset adult with a paddle in his/her hands getting ready to inflict pain upon a child.

I ain't cool with that thought.

Exactly. Adults have different trigger points.

The spanker could be more of a loose cannon than a the spankee.

Which is why I asked, what if when a teacher was about to paddle a student, the teacher was required to have another staff person present to witness? Or are we assuming now we'd have collusion and the teachers would conspire and go overboard?

Sorry. I quoted Clyde's first post on p.1 before I read through the rest of the pages, so did not see your comments on this.

I would need to be convinced of this method's effectiveness.

Did it decrease the student's unruly behavior or did just allow the teacher to blow off some steam?

Just tell me what they did wrong. Handled...
