You may be surprised to learn that in Kansas, and about 20 other states, teachers and caregivers are allowed to spank children as long as they don't leave a mark. But under a new proposal, that limitation would be lifted, allowing spanking hard enough to leave redness or a bruise as long as parents give permission.

McPherson Deputy County Attorney Britt Colle introduced the idea to Finney.

The proposed bill suggests lightening the spanking laws, allowing parents or anyone given permission by a parent, to spank hard enough to leave redness or bruising.

“This bill basically defines a spanking along with necessary reasonable physical restraint that goes with discipline, all of which has always been legal,” Colle said. “This bill clarifies what parents can and cannot do. By defining what is legal, it also defines what is not.”

Colle said the bill makes it clear that hitting a child with fists, hitting a child in the head or body, or hitting a child with a belt or switch is not legal discipline and may be considered battery or abuse.

Spank as needed, luckily for me that was a very few times for either of my kids.

Method:

Open hand to butt

School:

We had spanking when I was in school and everyone seemed to survive.

That said people have changed a great deal over the last 30 years and I'm not sure how much I would trust the average school to "Reasonably" punish my child.

Method:If administered, I would prefer the old fashion wide paddle that was used when I was in school. Every teacher seemed to have one, they were around 24" long and about 4" wide and about an inch thick with one end cut down for a handle. But I don't think I'd give my permission to them, let me know if they need a spanking and we'll handle it at home.

I grew up in a spanking (to put it nicely) environment, so that is all I knew when we first had children. My wife who became a schoolteacher was anti-spanking and educated and convinced me out of it. I wish I had never spanked any children. My youngest has never been spanked. All have grown into responsible adults. There are a lot better ways than hitting. Certainty of consequences and consistency are huge factors, and neither have to involve hitting.

Schools should not be in the biz of corporal punishment.

When I was in middle school I remember this one kid getting spanked on average of two or three times a week. At some point he complained that the teacher was too short and she was hitting him on the legs instead of the butt. So from then on every time he had one coming the teacher would take him down the hall to one of the male teachers for his "Licks". Even then it never changed his behavior, he got spanked through all of middle school and then got after school detention pretty much every day until he turn 16 towards the end of his freshman year and quit school. So for him there was no real adjustment in behavior from spankings.

I got spanked once by the principal when I was in first grade for running in the hall and.....well I pretty much toed the line from then on.
