Was it a can of worms in the 80's?

I'm not sure.

I teach middle school kids though. I wouldn't even want to be tempted with the thought of physically harming them.

Paddling is physical harm? I ask because I was paddled once by a teacher when in the 7th grade, and to this date, I have as much or more respect for him than any other teacher I had through 20 years of education.

Ha ha! Yeah, I didn't think that post through. :wacky:
I'd sign up for it in a blink. If he needed it, let him have it.

Same here.

Where is the line drawn with paddling though?

I've been heated with a few kids before, and I'll bet I'm not the only one. I'd be afraid someone would go Barry Bonds on someone's rear end.

I don't disagree. But, in my opinion only, we are a society of no consequences. It's not on a path to get any better either. I can tell you, as a grade schooler, I didn't want any part of being paddled by the principal. It wasn't abuse, it was a deterrent. No taliban, just consequence.

#1, there's a fine line between spanking and beating, and a frustrated teacher, or one who doesn't know how to deal with certain types of children (ie with social disourders) COULD very easily cross the line. I don't like it at ALL.

#2, I was raised in an atmosphere of beating, I mean the kind that left bleeding welps on your legs, butt, back, wherever. I was fortunate in that I have NEVER forgotten the pain of sitting through school on raw bleeding sores, and the way my skirt used to stick to the wounds as the blood would begin to dry (the beatings were from home, not school, but the wounds reopened with movement). I never spanked my kids. And with the exception of a year or two in the course of their lives, they were a pleasure to raise. They are respectful and productive and responsible. They are caring and kind and loving. I chose to remember and not repeat. However, the cycle of child abuse is that many abuse because they were abused. What happens if that teacher is one of the formerly abused who doesn't know the limits?

Have we forgotten the stories we've heard of abuse of children by teachers already? There was one teacher who put an autistic kid in a plastic bag to control him. Another story I remember of tying a kid to a chair, and yet another of locking a kid in the closet. Would you want those teachers to paddle your child?

What about a principal? Trained. Screened. Tested, whatever?

No.

What percentage of parents would sign a paper allowing teachers or administrators to paddle their kids to the point that said punishment would result in welts or bruising? Seriously? My guess would be less than 1 percent. This is what happens when the Taliban GOP takes control of state legislatures in the Bible Belt.

You're straight comedy. Really. Taliban GOP. Is that what you've resorted to? I've actually enjoyed some of your posts from time to time, but when you show your true colors, you're so hard to take seriously. Sad really.

I don't have any. If that eliminates me from the conversation I'll step out.

Doesn't eliminate you fom anything, I value your opinion, just wanted a frame of reference.

Thanks Lipton.

Spanking or paddling has no place in school for many reasons. First it does not deter behavior in many, it opens up litigation city and for a teacher is not worth the hassle. The lines drawn would be so varied, you would never agree. Just don't do it. There are other means. I have always thought consequences should be as natural as possible. Now that isn't always possible, but can be in a lot of cases.

One strategy when I caught students using profanity was have them call their parents and tell them the exact words they said. 100% of the time the kid did it and they were absolutely mortified to do it and almost every time the parent let them have it. I called the parent BTW and handed the phone to the kid. Way before cell phones were in all students' hands.

There are ways. If my kids would have had to call me in that instance, they would have rather gotten a paddling. I suspect that is the case with most.

I know there are outliers, but these types of strategies work.
