Newport Central Catholic 45 Trinity 44

Outside of beating Ballard in Louisville or MAYBE Scott County at Scott County or Hopkinsville in WKY, I don't know if there's a more impressive win that a team could notch than going into Louisville at this point in the season and knocking off Trinity.

HUGE momentum for NCC going into the regionals, especially with Holmes seeming to struggle at the wrong time.

Hugh win for the Breds! It looks like the 9th region is a two horse race between Ncc and Cov Cath. No one else in the 9th region has the talent or playing well enough at this time of the year to challenge either of these teams.

Huge win for NCC and coach Dawn. Way to go down and represent the 9th region and come home with a big W !!!

I'm a Breds fan, but having seen CovCath play twice including the half game with NCC, I have a hard time calling NCC the favorite. Ruthsatz' penetration ability, their overall outside shooting, quickness, & depth counter NCC's superior inside game such that the outcome is 50/50 to me.

If you would have told me that Pangallo was only going to get 2, I figured that would mean about a 7 point loss. Nope. When you have length and can defend in the half court, you will be in every tournament game.

Nice win by NCC. With the Moeves brothers from the trey line and McDonald and Schulte inside, it was a tough game for the Rocks to figure out where they were going. Oh yea throw in Pangallo handling the ball and Weyer adding both an inside and outside threat. NCC does a good job of getting everyone involved and is very unselfish.

Overall very impressed with Rock's Spaulding which he can get up... His tip ins and put backs were nothing but unreal. Also, Owens for the Rocks was as tough as tough can get. The problem he had last night was that McDonald seemed to have an answer for him every time he got the ball.

Really going to miss Craig Owens' play at Trinity when he graduates. What he gives up in height, he makes up in hustle and strength.

Tough loss for the Rocks. Congratulations to NCC. Szabo was apparently not impressed with Trinity's effort, implying NCC outworked his players, especially down low. I've said it before....NCC knows how to play the game the right way.

Part of me wonders if a lot of what we've seen from Trinity in the games against top competition this year stems from Trinity basically being built as a team with an almost singular objective. Everything from the style of defense to the pace of the game is a perfect style for slowing down and frustrating Ballard, which isn't necessarily the style you want in a game against NCC, where Trinity's athleticism perhaps could have been used to more effectively speed the game up.

But honestly in Trinity's defense, trying to beat a tough Ballard team this year is their sole purpose. Let's not make it like last night was some sort of meltdown for Trinity. It was a highly contested game that could have went either way. NCC is a very good team.

Terrific points

Very well put. I was kind of thinking the same thing.

This game means very little in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure if the State Championship, or a trip to play for it, were on the line, Trinity might have handled things differently.

Abandoning their game plan against the team they need to execute it against most -- Ballard -- to beat NCC would be kind of short-sighted.

No doubt about it. Although I couldn't make it to last night's game, I saw NCC play twice in the King of the Bluegrass. They're big, skilled and well-coached.

What I've seen of Trinity's problems that would keep them from winning a state title haven't changed all season: poor free throw shooting and a bizarre tendency to miss point-blank shots around the rim. It's cost them in big games all season and they'll be the things that bite the Shamrocks at the end.
