Why then didn't they filibuster in the normal fashion? Could it be that the body which they were in didn't have a mechanism for a filibuster so they bent the rules of their body to serve their needs? Are you OK with the message that sends to our youth?

The practice is well established. Abraham Lincoln took part in a similar legislative walkout in 1839.
January 28, 201412 yr Look, I appreciate the history and tradition of it all. I still get chills when the President is introduced and think it is cool. But this is America and it is not 1821. We need to revolutionize this address. Americans have ball games to attend, dinner to cook, PTA meetings, reruns of Lost to watch, etc. This can be rolled in to a podcast. Invite Jason Collins, Governor Beshear, and others and recognize them, conduct a few interviews, get across your message and omit the applause.

I also want to see the President discuss the need for full funding of early-childhood education. I guess he should address something that has got worse under his leadership.

So to clarify you don't have a problem with a legislator walking out on their duty , but you do have a problem with some Justices not wanting to hear the Presidents speech. Keep in mind they have no obligation to be there, and them not being there does not affect the government in the slightest. I feel you are trying to avoid the fact that Obama has not accomplished one call to action from his last State of the Union.

Excpect there to be a huge with congress if Obama tries to use executive order in the way he is describing. You can't ignore Article II of the constitution because you can't pass your agenda.

The only way to have this low of a rating is to have a large number of Democrats to disapprove of Congress's performance. Although their reason for naysaying most likely is very different than Republican naysaying.
