The problem with the 9th is the gap between the haves and have-nots. Newport Catholic, St. Henry, Newport and Covington Holy Cross typically field competitive teams. Beechwood and Lloyd are hit and miss. The rest of the region is just miles away from where the top of the list is.

Would it be better if they created separate regions for the All "A" to make 16 8-team regions? Would that force too much travel?

Yes in a short answer. Remember this has to be financially viable at the Region and State level.

Right now there are only two in the Seventh: Kentucky Country Day and Collegiate. But I think Tony Williams has already started putting something fun together at St. Francis. It could definitely happen in Louisville.

I think the 11th has the chance to be competitive this year. Some years, the 13th will have some good games as well, sometimes there'll be 3-4 teams with a legitimate chance of winning it unless LCA just rolls over everyone.

The two favorites in the 4th went down this year. Much bigger surprise than usual.

Definitely. Of the 16 schools in the 15th Region, 9 of them are in the All A. Among those not in the tournament are Lawrence County, Magoffin County, Prestonsburg, each of which actually participated last year. I believe only Belfry, East Ridge, Johnson Central and Pike Central haven't played in the tournament. It actually makes for a decent preview to the end-of-year regional tournament.

It did drop down. It originally was the smallest 125 in grades 10-12, but that changed some time back. If I'm not mistaken, the past several years it had been the smallest 128 schools. After some complaints about too many schools getting in, they dropped it back to 120 this year. They also no longer (and haven't in some time) use 10-12 but rather 9-12 grade.

The 14th is mostly made up of All A schools as well. Only schools not in the All A are Letcher Central, Perry Central, Knott Central (and they were in it last year, their enrollment is up and down), Powell County, Estill County, and Breathitt County ( and Breathitt's enrollment is borderline of being able to qualify for the All A. Their school has a similar enrollment to Knott).

All 3 games in the 8th have been competitive...

Every game in the boys' 5th Region was decided by 10 points or less, with one of them an OT thriller.

 

That wasn't the case when Bardstown was a participant, as they generally dominated the 5th.
