NFL to eliminate PATs???

Could be....

"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about," Goodell said. "It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six."

I wouldn't be a fan of this. If they are doing this in the guise of player safety, whatever. Otherwise, make the kick. Enough of these are missed and blocked that I think it is a worth while play- especially when penalties impact the distance of the extra point. I also worry about the trickle down. This is still a pivotal play at the collegiate and especially the high school levels that is not a gimme. I would hate to see this bit of strategy taken out of the game.

Dumb to take a point away

This would be terrible.

As a member of a union I am never in favor of job elimination. This would essentially end all careers for kickers.

Not really, you still got to have somebody to kick the FG. Many more games are won / lost due to FG kicking than PAT's.

I wouldn't mind seeing them forced to go for two after every TD, or at least move the PAT back so that it is a bit more in doubt.

Wouldn't the kickers still be needed for field goals and kick offs?

You beat me by one minute. LoL

I would certainly put risk/reward into high gear in football. Not sure if that justifies it though.

PP may be on to something with job elimination. I think this would be a precursor to eliminating kick offs. If extra points and kick offs are eliminated, then I could see an NFL reality where you have one kicker for kicking and punting. That roster spot likely wouldn't go away, but it would be fewer kicking jobs, potentially.

Only 5 PATs were missed this season and 4 of those were blocked.

That's the reason to keep the play, IMO.

I think PAT's should be tried from the 15 IMO and 2 point conversions from the 5.

99.1% success rate since 2004.

In other words, automatic.

I love the idea of bannig the XP kick and having teams go for 2.

A team would find one guy who can punt, do kickoffs and field goals. Most punters can kick field goals. Why pay for 2 guys when you can have 1 that does it all?
