January 22, 201412 yr Author What would be the point of this proposal?? It seems like all you'd be doing is adding points. Teams are rewarded for scoring touchdowns now---7 points instead of 3. It takes 3 field goals to outscore 1 touchdown now. By making a TD and XP worth 8, it still takes 3 field goals to outscore a touchdown. Because lets use the 50 yard line as a starting point .......you have to go to the 35 (15 yards) to get a FG attempt that is worth 3 points and some kickers (especially indoors) can make those a high percentage of the time.......so you can gain 15 yards 3 different times from the 50 and get 9 points........but you have to go 50 yards to get 7 points. I think the idea that a team down 21-10 might consider (and be rewarded) by going for it on 4th and 2 from the 33 in order to score a TD that could make it a 21-18 or 21-19 game instead of kicking a 50 yard FG to make it 21-13.
January 22, 201412 yr Just going to toss this out there...but, rather than moving the ball further away from the goal line for PAT's...what about moving it closer? My thinking is that rather than trying to DISCOURAGE coaches from trying a kick after a touchdown (by moving the attempt soooooo far back that it's not automatic), maybe they should be ENCOURAGING coaches to go for two, instead. By putting the ball at the one, don't you think you'd see more coaches thinking "we should be able to make that more than 50% of the time". There'd still be games that got out of hand, that the leading coach might just kick it instead (save his plays, and his players), but you might see more trailing coaches willing to go for 2 earlier in the game.

Changing the points really doesn't change the scenario much. Since the team would need a field goal regardless (either now or later) most coaches will likely take the field goal, even if you were late in the game, and try to score the touchdown later. You can create just as many scenarios with the current scoring system (touchdown+xp=7 or 8 points) that forces coaches to make decisions as you can with your system (Touchdown+xp=8 or 9 points). There are still only two choices to make, and most only take the higher risk greater reward choice when they have to, late in the game. I doubt you'll see coaches making the riskier choice early in the game, much like you don't see coaches go for two early in the game.
January 22, 201412 yr I do not like taking the PAT away. All the NFL is trying to get to commercials quicker for more advertising dollars. There is a reason they have free throws in basketball and a reason the PGA doesn't have gimmie putts... Yes PAT are 99 some %, but they are not 100%. There have been several games lost over the years due to a missed PAT. This would not be a good example for young kids either, they need to learn how to make the simple kicks. Also, you could potentially harm careers of kickers in general and place kickers as well. It would be an overall negative affect for the game of football.
January 22, 201412 yr Author I would be in favor of eliminating the PAT if it meant all the commercials could be grouped together right after the TD.......instead of now where we have commercials after the PAT....then we come back to watch the kickoff sail 5 yards past the back of the endzone......then more commercials.
January 23, 201412 yr If you're going to get rid of it, don't make it an automatic 7. 6 is what a TD has been worth since the game started, just make everyone go for 2 while getting 6 for a TD.

Will never happen. The goal is to eliminate FGs determining games and to emphasize TDs. Then to make players do 8 extra plays a game with the increase chance of injury will never fly with the NFLPA.
