January 15, 201412 yr They just didn't work on them enough apparently. I still can't figure out how BCG was able to have two really good FT shooting teams :lol2: If I remember the 2012 led the SEC in FT shooting. Because BCG was a toughness coach (albeit overboard at times). He used to talk about FT shooting being about mental toughness and that is what he practice and preached. My Dad always says he could build the perfect coach by taking Cal the recruiter, Pitino the prepare r, and Tubby the bench Coach... maybe he should add BCG as special free throw consultant.

January 15, 201412 yr Sure why not, he also rebuilt Haiti, the people down there like him a tad more than you.. Lol Actually I have no dislike or like for Cal. But to think his motivation for recruiting the top players to help end poverty is a little much even for me to swallow.. HA
January 15, 201412 yr Officiating ... Without looking at the stats, my guess is there are more fouls called in Arkansas games than just about any other team. That is the style they play. With the new rules this year, it is going to be even worse. I watched the whole game and thought it was pretty well officiated. They were consistent. Sure they missed calls but it wasn't lopsided against either team. Free Throws ... I mentioned this in the game thread. I believe a big part of the problem with free throw shooting is the youth of Cal's teams at UK. Freshmen are not going to be as good shooting free throws as upper classmen. I pulled some stats to see if my thought is right. Of the top 200 free throw shooters in NCAA D1, how many do you think are freshmen .... 13. Here is another thought, out of those 13, only 5 are 6'3" or taller. Cal recruits big players and plays a lot of freshmen. They are not going to be good free throw shooters. NBA ... Cal better talk a lot about the NBA because it is the key to his recruiting. These top tier kids are coming to UK because they see UK players drafted in round 1 of the NBA draft. If I were Cal, I would talk about it every chance I got. It will keep the talent flowing. In general on Coach Cal, I have zero complaints and hope he is here a very long time.
January 15, 201412 yr I bleed Kentucky Blue. When I finished my basement I have an entire area dedicated to UK Basketball. For instance, I have a UK Styled pool table, UK blue felt and wildcat legs on the table. I have every Sports Illustrated framed and hanging on the wall from when they won the NCAA since Sports Illustrated was first published. Huge UK Fan. With that said, and a lot due to the officiating this year especially, it has gotten to be real hard to watch any of these games. Last nights game may have been the straw that broke the camels back. The officiating was so horrid against UK that it isn't enjoyable to watch a game. 60 fouls called in one game!?!?! That is beyond ridiculous. Coach Cal. He is slowly beginning to wear on me. I love his coaching, I love his recruiting, what I don't love anymore is the inability for any of his teams to hit free throws. It is a Coach Cal coached team problem his entire career. If his boys could hit free throws he would have at least 2 national championships. It cost him in Memphis a national title, it has cost him every loss this year. What makes it worse is when he makes statements like he did the other week when responding to the fans concerns about the inability to shoot free throws and he said "it was not a problem, and not to worry about it. The team is fine when it comes to their free throw shooting." Sorry Coach, but if the team just shoots 65% of their free throws they win last night. If the team just shoots 70-75% on the year they are undefeated. Free throw shooting has become such a problem they allow every single team they play over the last 5 years to stay in just about every single game. One other thing I have gotten fed up with. When Coach Cal talks about his players going to the NBA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he seem to be more concerned with how many of his kids get to the NBA than winning during the season? All you ever hear him talk about is how proud he is when his kids get drafted. He made the stupid statement a couple years ago when he said on the day that 6 players were drafted "Today is the biggest day in UK History" No Cal, No it wasn't.....I could really care less if 3, 4 or 5 players get drafted. The biggest days in UK history are the days whent he teams win championships. It's to the point where Cal has already said he can't stand tournaments and doesn't like playing in them. He's on record saying he can't stand the SEC tournament....well guess what Cal? The fans LOVE the SEC tourney. Why do you think year after year we invade whatever city the tourney is played in and paint the town blue?!?! I don't watch the NBA, I can't stand the NBA, what I do watch and what I do have a passion about is UK Basketball. Do us a favor Coach, practice free throws and don't be so concerned with how many of your players go pro. This year alone there are only 2 players worthy of going to the NBA after the season, Randel and Cauly Stein. any other of your players go pro after the season will be an injustice and if you actually tell any of the other players they should go, well then maybe your priorities are so far screwed that it may be time for you to reevaluate your priorities when it comes to UK Basketball. Off my soap box. THAT'S GOOD, I AGREE

Here is the call, or should I say non call that got me the most irritated last night that I actually had to turn away from the TV for most of the remainder of the game. It was when we in-bounded the ball near the scorers table and Harrison got the inbound right near half court and the Arkansas player pushed him over the half court line but no foul was called, instead it was called over and back. It was horrible especially how they were calling fouls against UK most of the night. it was beyond ridiculous.
January 15, 201412 yr Not to get away from your post, but I thought the conversation with Jay Williams and Greenberg (I think) between the end of the IU game begining of the UK game was very interesting regarding the foul calls. The Big 10 refs let those guys kill each other in the IU game then 60 fouls are called in the UK game. It's going to be very hard for teams to adjust back and forth on this issue. It's got to be one way or the other, these kids are going to be very hard to teach defense to if the way the game is called changes every other night. Saturday UK vs Vandy: 28 fouls Three days later, UK vs Arkansas: 60 fouls
January 15, 201412 yr 2010: 67% from the FT Line - Elite 8 2011: 71% from the FT Line - Final 4 2012: 72% from the FT Line - National Champs 2013: 64% from the FT Line - NIT 2014: 66% from the FT Line - ??? So the trend is that postseason success is directly tied to FT%? 66% would be about a Sweet 16, right? Hope they can pull it up before the tournament. Edited January 15, 201412 yr by mobaar

January 15, 201412 yr They should know how to make free throws before they get to UK. He can make them shoot 500 a day but in the games they still miss. He can't do it for them. Cal does stress the NBA a lot because he wants to end poverty in kids families. Usually a team full of Nba guys benefits us UK fans but not recently. Coach Cal stresses the NBA over and over because he wants to continue to successfully recruit the top kids in high school with the promise that he is the guy with the track record to get them into the league and all the fortune and fame that goes with it. It really is very self-serving and who can blame this philosophy at a basketball school like UK?
January 15, 201412 yr All I know is that for me personally it will be a sad day when Cal decides to part ways with UK. I could not imagine anybody that I would rather have as coach at this time.

Paging Clyde. Paging Clyde. I will tell you one thing I did notice on that play. When Harrison caught the ball, his foot was on the line and part of his foot was in the back court. I would like to see a replay and see if he pulled his foot back over the line before then getting bumped into the back court. If he never moved his foot to the front court, it shouldn't have been over and back. The fouls were almost dead even in the game. I believe UK had 31 fouls and Arkansas had 29.

IIRC it was VERY close, but Andrew appeared to be completely over the line before being pushed back over.

To me, the thing about "counting fouls" is that doesn't really show equity in the calls. Arkansas' defense is known for committing many, many fouls. Kentucky's is not. (Gauged by the way things have gone, not just this year but most year's with Cal's defenses) So to measure by number isn't a real gauge imo. Arkansas (much like Pitino's teams at UK and UL) create a reaching, pushing, hacking atmosphere and foul a lot.

But I really didn't see anything out of line with the officiating last night. They made bad calls on both teams.
