I'm a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of parent. I have 2 tattoos. I got one when I was 24 and one when I was 44. I would never allow my underage children to get one but what they do once they are out of my house and on their own, I cannot control. I don't see it happening though.

They have no desire to smoke and think it's disgusting. Thank God!

Nobody on either side of my family have non normal piercings or tatoos! Now egos on the other hand.....

I have four kids. My oldest son (23) got a tat last this year. I would not give permission when he lived under my roof. My other three kids do not have tats. Once they reach legal age then they can decide what they want. None smoke and never will if they live with me.

As far as the OP question, I don't have an issue with the tatoos, I just hope if they decide to get one they don't get one on a whim and really put some thought into it. Also make sure it can be easily covered. Nothing from the elbow down or the neck line up. I'll smack either if they start smoking. I'd rather they smoke pot then cigarettes.

 

I am with you. I am fine with a tat, but it has to be something that warrants a tat and has significance. I am not going to get a full arm sleeve because it makes me looks hardcore. I was 29 when I got mine.

I'm not a parent but I'll always remember a story about my dad hearing that my sister wanted a small stud in her nose during her freshman year of college. His response: "Sure, go ahead... the university will really miss my tuition checks, though." Needless to say, it didn't happen.

 

If I had kids, I'd have a real problem with tattoos. I could probably be convinced to let it slide if they were AT LEAST nearly 18 and it was small and not visible when wearing normal clothing.

I'm 27 and have three, probably getting a fourth sometime this year... All of them can be easily covered with "normal" clothing.

I have three tattoos, and I hate tattoos on girls. I definitely agree it's a double standard with me as well, MTGL....

 

I don't have any tattoos, not allowed to get one due to heart issues, but I have no issues with them. I find girls with tattoos more attractive, albeit tasteful ones. None of that tramp stamp crap.

 

As to the question, I would not allow either under 18, however once they turned 18 it would be their decision. They'll know the dangers of smoking, but once they hit that age, I'm a firm believer in letting adults make their own choices.

Son smokes. He smoked under my roof, but was 18 and bought his own. I smoked, as did his mom, at the time. He knew the dangers as did we. It seemed hypocritical to lay down a law we couldn't follow. I quit 9 years ago, Mrs. S 15 years ago. He and his wife smoke, but only when they drink beer, now and never with the kids around. As with us, not in the house, either. The kid has one up on me.

 

He has a tat on his hand he got a year or so a go.

 

My daughter has never smoked. After she left home, she got herself a "tramp stamp", hates it when I call it that, too. Oddly enough, she does everything she can to keep it covered, now.

 

When 23 she decided she wanted to get her nose pierced and ask for my opinion. I can't post exactly what I told her, but she never got her nosed pierced.

2) My son is 22 and cannot do either because of medical issues so no worries there. My daughter will be 17 on Sunday and has no desire to have a tattoo or to smoke so no worries there either. If she does change her mind at 18, she will talk to me about it first because 1) that's the kind of relationship we have and 2) she'll try to get me to pay for it! LOL

I did let her get her belly button pierced at 16 which was huge for me to allow!

Tattoos - as stated by many - not under my roof (or while receiving ANY financial aid). This is wife's very strict rule.

 

Smoking - not been an issue but not allowed around house at all. Wife's rule. Husband is occasionally is busted for violation.

 

Hooka - Oldest got into this at the Lexington Hooka bar before age 21. Highly discouraged. None allowed in house or rental house (for school).

 

Smokeless tobacco - All (three) have gotten into this before graduating from HS. Extremely discouraged but near impossible to stop.

 

Electronic cigs - This is the new thing. Again, highly discouraged and forbidden in house. The exotic ones have flavored liquid cartridges and are expensive for the base element. But, like smokeless, know its done - at least on occasion.
