Unfortunately parents can't stop kids from doing either as much as they want to think they can...

 

I have no tattoos and have never smoked...

I'm holding my kids to the same standards I was held to. Under our roof no tats or smoking until 18. They're educated on the dangers of smoking so no concerns there. If our kids can fight battles and die protecting our country at 18. I can't say no to a tattoo.

 

Just hope it isn't a Tyson face tattoo :loll: .

I got a tattoo when 27 and may get another (it is deigned and ready). I have never smoked and loathe it.

 

If they had to do one or the other, I'd pay for the ink after turning 18. Complete double-standard alert: wouldn't be upset if son got ink eventually, REALLY hope daughter never does.

Yes. Double standard. It is what it is. That's why my girl knows that if she gets one that is visible, she may be judged unfairly. Her choice.

My 21 year old daughter got a tattoo when she was 16 or 17 and although it is a small one on the back of her shoulder, I didn't approve but her mother did so that is how that went lol.

So I look at it as if I was the one that deterred them from smoking, so at least I did something right in raising them...sacrificed my own health for the betterment of theirs.

Congrats on stopping. My mom and dad both smoked and had to stop. Very hard to do.

Have 4 kids and daughter and youngest son wanted tatoos. We didn't really care because there are many other things that we would take a stand on, such as drinking and driving and drugs, being involved in two sports, activities or clubs while in high school and keeping their grades to acceptable standards. Tatoos, piercings and other stuff like that were not encouraged nor discouraged and they could do so at 18 whether they lived with us or not. My daughter got a tatoo on her 18th birthday on her ankle. Youngest son got his nipples pierced on his 18th birthday and they were always painful. He regrets it now, but a life lesson. He also smokes now and is the only one that does besides me. We just felt don't sweat the small stuff, but I understand if that isn't small stuff to some. We did advise them that tatoos were permanant and get them inplaces that were not obvious to the public and in a professional career setting if they choose that path

That is a crazy coincidence -- you better get to work on funding the older couple's pre-arranged marriage.

Somehow all of ours ended up smart enough to know better on both counts.

 

We strongly discouraged either activity for health reasons. Piercing was the bigger thing when our oldest two were hitting the late teens, and of course the daughter had ear piercings, but our older son did (on his own) as well. Funny thing was when he got to college and played soccer, he outgrew it.

I know 2nd hand smoke was bad for them. I wasn't one of those that would smoke around them. I would never smoke inside so would go outside to smoke or if it was raining etc. I wold go in the garage and smoke with the door open etc. I would also smoke in the car so the car stunk. That is what they would complain the most about was the smell in the car and what I smelled like.

 

I always thought I was a considerate smoker. Even when I was out I wold never smoke around others or evcen when in a restaurant and if we sat in a smoking section I would still go outside to smoke if we were eating with other people etc.

As far as the OP question, I don't have an issue with the tatoos, I just hope if they decide to get one they don't get one on a whim and really put some thought into it. Also make sure it can be easily covered. Nothing from the elbow down or the neck line up. I'll smack either if they start smoking. I'd rather they smoke pot then cigarettes.
