It's not going to happen at Highlands, but I think Highlands is one of the very few schools in the state that would not consider him. Highlands for better and worse is it's own animal and what would conventional thinking at other places is replaced by their own sense of right and wrong. In this case they will bend over backwards to hire a coach with Highlands ties and not just a hired gun so to speak.

Chuck Smith is the Duck Dynasty of this board...I'll be happy when his name is just no longer a consideration. It's been two years of every job that comes open = Chuck Smith possibility.

Young, hungry assistant at your own program sees that it's going to be a long time before they get a shot at the head coaching job at your place. They recognize that fact and go to an "upstart" school to get their own chance. Along the way, they get to the new school and emulate lots of the things that your program does that separates itself from others and defines its success. At the same time, your team is still doing that, while lots of other schools start catching on (from observing both your school and the coaching philosophies of those in the "coaching tree"). Before long, your competitive advantage has eroded and others are doing what you've done to be successful while there's no "new blood" in the original program. That new blood might bring new perspective and a way of doing things that can improve on your current processes, no matter how good they may be perceived to be.

 

Growth and results (in evaluating results of performance) don't evolve in a linear progression. They evolve exponentially. Think too much in terms of the status quo and you might risk falling behind the curve.

 

I think Highlands is making a mistake if Smith applies and they don't consider him. He's won at scenarios/places other than Boyle County (where he won big) and could apply what he's done to make Boyle successful to what is already in place that makes Highlands successful to go even further. Or they could take a chance, banking on the fact that the next guy in line at Highlands can exceed those results. Maybe they can, maybe they can't, but I think it's a risky game either way.

 

From an outsider's perspective, Smith seems like more of a proven commodity (long term) than the guy whose been in the program. That's just me though.

If I'm reading correctly HHS has brought in an outside name coach one time and that didn't work out too well. Since they've played in 28 of 55 championship games I'd say staying within the system has worked out pretty well. However, if anyone from outside the system deserves interest it would certainly be Smith.

I think it worked out from a football standpoint as he did win 2 state championships. Looking at this hire in 88', it was a slam dunk. Duffy came from Danville where he was loved and had a proven track record. He could coach football but it is a different dynamic in Fort Thomas and something an outsider may not understand. I don't know Smith personally but he is a great football coach. If he is not a community person, teacher, schmoozer, etc., I don't think it would work out.

The last thing that the 220 other football playing schools want is for Highlands to stick with the status quo.

I don't see the word broken in my post anywhere and think you are kind of missing the point of what I was saying.

 

It isn't about getting to the top, it's staying on top when others do the things you were doing to make you successful. Take Collins starting to platoon this year as an example. For so long, that was a competitive advantage that Highlands was one of the few schools in the class to enjoy. Now, someone does it this year and beats them at their own game. Think other schools didn't take notes of what Collins did?

 

When others start emulating what you've done and you are risking falling into "group-think" by only hiring from within and maintaining a traditional way of doing things, you may fall behind.

 

Since growth and production on these types of curves usually occurs exponentially, you can risk falling way behind once things pass you by.

 

For an example of the "exponential" growth and production I'm talking about, think of it like this: for a long time, the Olympic high jump was done in a way where people ran straight at the bar and did a "Superman" dive over it. There might have been some incremental gains on the world records. Then there was a scissor kick that started to shatter those records. More incremental gains once everyone started to catch on. Then along comes Fosbury and the "Fosbury Flop" that most everyone uses today. The scissor kick records are shattered and everyone is catching up.

 

When you ONLY hire from within, you would be behind these curves unless the Superman, Scissor kick, and Fosbury innovators were all already in your system.

I'm not saying Highlands needs someone to come in and "reinvent the wheel".

 

I'm saying that when someone whose had success like Chuck Smith has had and can come in and take what's already established and in place at Highlands, then fine tune it by adding elements of what worked at Boyle County and what he learned coaching in the SEC to their processes of theirs that could stand to improve, then the final product is probably going to be better.

 

No one wants to "follow a legend" and that's what Mueller is. Good luck to the next guy, especially if he's never been in charge of a program himself.
