Ballard 89 Newport Central Catholic 71

Featured Replies

Titles in 1977, 1988, 1999.

Runners-up in 1987, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013.

The school opened, I believe, in 1973.

That 2010 game remains the most puzzling game result I've ever seen.

I'd have loved to have seen the back-to-back title games between Clay County and Ballard in '87 and '88 when Scotty Davenport was coaching the Bruins.

I saw Ballard's team in the 77' state tournament and IMO that is their best team ever with Jeff Lamp, Lee Raker, Jerry Eaves, Curtis Jeffries, Norman Miller

Impressive showing by Ballard beating one of NKY's better teams. This may temper some enthusiasm for what NKY has to offer this year. There is a lot of talent in NKY but I think the same goes for the rest of the state as shown last night.

I believe Lamp and Raker played for Virginia, Eaves for UL, Miller for Ole Miss. Don't know about Jeffries. Think the coach was Richard Schmidt.

Disagree. I think NCC and Holmes are both top 5 teams in the state. They should be very enthused about both teams.

Lamp played in the NBA for a few years also

Congrats Ballard !!!

Nice win Ballard, hope this doesn't take any enthusiasm out of the Breds for the rest of the season. I just don't understand the second half result in this game? Was there a large adjustment by Ballard? Foul trouble by NCC? What the heck happened?

Ballard's typical game plan is to play back a bit during the first half so that in the second they can come out and play at breakneck speed on both offense and defense for every single minute. They pressure the full length of the court defensively, hounding ball handlers and double-teaming constantly. They then use their athleticism, speed and skill to absolutely fly when they have the ball. When it works, this is what it looks like.

Last year in the 7th Region quarterfinals, Seneca had 10-point lead at halftime, 35-25. Ballard came out after the break and won the third and fourth frames by a combined 51-12 for 76-47 final score. It was stunning.

Would you say the teams that beat them weren't as good as Ballard? Madison Central was as good as Ballard last year. wasn't it Shelby Valley that beat them in 2010? Were they not as good as Ballard then?

I think Ballard had a slightly better team than Madison Central last year. I was pulling for Madison Central because Richmond is only about an hour drive from where I live and I have relatives and friends who live there, but Ballard did more to give that game away than what Central did to win it. Also I think Ballard had the better team over Shelby Valley. That was a big upset in my opinion.

Ballards 3 pt shooting was the difference. They shot 20% and 23% in their first 2 games and 46% last night. Martin had been 1-6 and then goes 6-10 and Kovacevic had been 1-11 and goes 3-5. Really not a lot NCC could do when many of the shots were from 20+ feet. Ncc handled the pressure fine, only turning it over 14 times and had many layups against the press. Snider is the real deal. Best I have seen without a doubt. Can not only score but sees the floor extremely well and a great passer. Very unselfish.

Don't forget -- Holmes scored 29 on NCC in the 4th quarter of last year's double OT thriller.

I really need to see this team play. I can't imagine that type of explosive ability!

I watched LexCath BLITZKRIEG NewCath in '97 with like a 30-3 1st quarter. That 3/4 trap press was incredible, and it didn't hurt having 2 DI players and Derrick White on the court. Ballard sounds better than that. I want to see them play as well. I love teams that press and have "spurtability." There is nothing like watching a 20-4 run when one team's press is dominating. It seems so much more impressive than a 20-4 run where the game is played in half court sets.
