Dr's Ad in the Local Newspaper

People don't realize the 7 figure debt physicians often incur when they go through all of the education required of them. Not 5 figure. Not 6, but 7 figure. I was a paltry 75K in the hole when I graduated many moons ago. I pity the kids now who have to incur that load just to get a parchment with their degree stamped on it.

If I were a high school kid considering a career in medicine, I would probably talk to a military recruiter about being a doctor in a military hospital. While the pay of military doctors may not be great, at least your education would be covered. I say this since I often look back and regret not serving.

I don't see how that could be possible? Where did they get their figures? That's only a few years of schooling.

I thought that $150,000 figure was a little low, too. The following sounds like it's more in line, based on what CWB wrote in Post #23.

The median four-year cost to attend medical school -- which includes outlays like living expenses and books -- for the class of 2013 is $278,455 at private schools and $207,868 at public ones, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, a nonprofit group of U.S. schools.

Then why did you make the claim there was far more to the story?

Because simply blaming Obamacare sounded a little too tidy of an explanation for the doc closing up his shop without a whole lot of notice ... but one that nevertheless would likely satisfy most of his patients and most of the newspaper's readers. I'm just speculating here. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

This thread...

As usual, American politics comes down to the unbridled contempt of one side for the other with the mind-numbingly consistent result that nothing gets better.

We have exactly the political climate we deserve.

Word.

Laws by state vary, the state where I just sold a practice required 2 weeks notice and for 2 consecutive days. I could have easily stated my reasons for leaving, but since I sold mine, I don't think the fella who bought it would have appreciated it. This guy didn't sell it, just quit. I have no issue with him stating the reason. And he fully is within his right to do so. And his patients likely don't doubt it for a minute. Politics aside (difficult ain't it?) he was probably spot on in his explaining a major factor in his decision.

I agree and it's a terrific idea. And many hospitals will include repayment of student loans in a package/contract with docs right out of school. It's why you see movement in your local hospitals of physicians at a rapid rate. They serve their time under their contracts, get out of debt and bail to where they want to practice longer term often.

If pointing out how harmful Obamacare is to our economy and HC system and our right to protected personal health care info makes me a one sided political hack then so be it . Doesnt have anything to do with party . This is extremely poor legislation .

You live down there. I don't. Try doing a little investigative work instead of just posting stuff that fits your biased narrative.

You're so confusing with your pictures and no comment.

Obamacare was a main factor as to why my brother-in-law retired at 56, and I can assure you the man is not a coward, a quitter nor has he made enough money to move to the Cayman Islands. He wasn't alone, many of his colleagues have done the same.

And here's my take on it. Good for your brother for getting out. People don't realize the 7 figure debt physicians often incur when they go through all of the education required of them. Not 5 figure. Not 6, but 7 figure. I was a paltry 75K in the hole when I graduated many moons ago. Assuming you get through med school and become a practicing physician, would you say it's still worth it? I mean the world will always need doctors, right?

Coming from that particular poster, his comment was incredibly ironic and pretty darn funny.

So much hogwash presented as fact on these political threads, 75. I just try to keep the discussion fact-based. I also should point out that the introduction of a thread topic is a statement in itself, regardless of whether the poster who initiated said statement offered comment.

If someone else say Big Green Horse or McPapa had started this thread you would have taken it a completely different way...I posted it because I had never seen an ad like this. Do not assume you know what my motive was or wasn't. Politically I'm not 100% tied to any party or ideal...For example Lipton Bash and I agree on a great many things politically and there are some we are 180 degrees apart on. On social issues I am much more liberal than on fiscal issues.

I was also hoping that someone like Spindoc or others could enlighten the rest of us to how this legislation effects doctors.

I recently lost my Cardiologist because he closed his private practice to work only for the hospital and my father in law lost his General Practitioner for the same reason. I was also wondering how many people have lost their doctor over the last year due to a similar situation.

I have a friend with 2 kids in Med school and I believe he is paying for much of it, can't even imagine how they are doing it.:idunno:
