As far as Collins fast rise if you know anything about the area then it is no surprise. Collins is the product of Shelby Co being split into two schools. The students that go to Collins come from the West Middle School which is where a majority of the football and basketball players at Shelby Co came from. So when Collins was created you pretty much took the Shelby Co football program and moved it down in classifications. The Collins coaching staff is made up of coaches with ties to the history of Shelby Co with people like Tom Becherer and Phil Bell (Coach Becherer took Shelby Co to 4 state titles with one of those being the upset of Boone Co). Bring in Coach Lucas who family and coaching background is well known in NKY and him having a vision on how to take advantage of players and resources he has. In 4 years the school has been to the semifinals and now the state finals twice. The school is going to be one of the top programs.

Thanks for the history. I had remembered a little from last year, it is impressive how quickly they've become a force. How are they set for the future after this senior class moves on?

I think you might want to look closer at Collins before you decide that. Lots of offensive firepower and their defense has played very very well.

They will always have talent and with the success the HS is having they will get and keep players. One of Collins issues in the past 4 years had been the defense. This was in part due to players going both ways and now that has changed. Over the history of the Shelby Co before the split there were a few issues such as not a huge commitment to offseason workouts (I'm saying over the past 20 years or so) and splitting athletes with basketball and baseball. There is nothing wrong with splitting athletes and you should be but those athletes did not lift weights or do other such things.

Got to respect what the Blue Birds have done over the years. Will be supporting the birds in this one for sure.

Let me clearer. Ryan is a talented 4-star QB. He has a bright future. I saw him play once this season and he had a bad game. Of all the QBs I was able to see play this season there are at least 3 that I saw have a better Friday night than he did when I saw him.

That's true, they have the advantage of seeing him multiple games.

 

Statistically Lawson and Ryan are dead even. Similar number of passes, receptions, yards and TDs. Lawson had only 4 INTs all year to Ryans 9. Plug the numbers into the efficiency rating calculator and they come out to within 1 point of each other.

 

Collins has more yardage passing than running - like LexCath. So offensively, on paper, the teams look similar. LexCath put up 35 - with a runni.......oh, lets not go there! So, on paper, Collins should be able to do something similar.

 

If you want to see a difference between Collins and LexCath look at passing yards allowed.

Collins - 1634, LexCath - 2366. On paper, Collins is better pass defense. LexCath had trouble with good QBs who had taller athletic receivers to throw to. If the Collins CBs and safeties are on the tallish side with speed they will do better than the Knights. Also, LexCath rarely broke from its man-to-man, even in 3rd and longs, and paid a price.

 

Conversely, on paper, Collins does not stop the run like LexCath did (1728 to 1952 rushing yards allowed). HHS mostly ran counters against LexCath to keep the blitzing muted while mainly throwing over the top for big plays. I know HHS ran more against CovCath. I would suspect a more balanced attack out of HHS out of a lot of different sets.

 

On paper, Collins can fair better than LexCath. I highly recommend they avoid early turnovers!

Lots of numbers in the above post to digest. Maybe on paper the conclusion that Collins can fair better is correct. I would agree if the two teams being compared had played like schedules.

 

LexCath's totals include games against Highlands, Boyle, St Xavier and Bowling Green. A virtual murderer's row of KY high school football. Collins best opponent is either Central Hardin or Simon Kenton. Me thinks this skews the statistics a bit.

I think the fact Collins got there last year will make a difference in how they play. I don't think they'll have those same jitters as last year. Plus, the fact they are playing the same team again, is additional motivation and I'm sure there coach looked at a ton of film from that game and learned what to do in various situations and what he'd do should he get another chance. Yes, last year was a one-sided game. I just don't see it that way this year. I think the talent level is pretty even. Highlands has the depth advantage, but, Collins is plenty deep in a one game scenario. Highlands D has struggled this year. I can't ever remember a Highlands team that's given up the amount of points that this team has and no, it wasn't always against the JV. They've struggled to contain teams. Passing teams have blitzed there DBs, running teams have been effective running straight at them. Just a slew of yards and points given up. They've been able to outscore everyone so far, but, those teams didn't have the D that Collins does. Highlands will be the huge favorite, and, rightfully so, but, don't be shocked if Collins comes out on top. Matter of fact, I'm going to call it...MLC 34 HHS 27

According to the stats i have seen, Harris hit 1000 against Lexington Catholic.

As suspect as some have maintained the D is, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Highlands will be just fine Sat. For heavens sake, they are 13-1.

 

If it hits a running clock at anytime for Highlands, then I say Dale put the pedal down. Run it up until you feel comfortable. No last weeks again.

 

I don't see a running clock against a team like Collins though. They are too good and seasoned to let that happen again. Birds win though 35-14.

Not sure what you think coach might get from last years film. Last year he would see QB draw, QB counter, bootleg run. Dale said in the paper last week that the two touchdown runs for Houliston in that game were the first two running plays called all year for the QB.

That's why I laugh when people credit the "HHS system" for the success of our quarterbacks. Each one has been different.
