Was tonight a moral victory for CovCath?

Featured Replies

Mueller has to be the best high school football coach in the state. His record speaks for itself. CCH represented themselves well last night, but no moral victory. If you ask their kids they would also probably say no. I'm sure they thought they would win.

I'm sure they thought they would win.

Again, publicly - yes.

In the hearts they knew they were up against it and going to end up on the short end.

Not sure why people have a problem with kids knowing that. It certainly doesn't impact how they go about preparation. They're smart. They know things.

It might be RU, but shouldn't be. I liken this to Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. He had a losing record against OSU and had to go. Tressel was 9-1 against Michigan. Only one game a year matters at CCH and that's the playoff game against HHS. Need a coach that can take them down. What is Wirth's record against HHS?

Please Roman- HHS and Mueller owns EVERYBODY in NKy (at least those that PLAY them) and most of the state.

Anyone NOT affiliated with CCH can stick it when it comes to criticizing the ability to beat HHS. No one else plays them on a year in year out basis like CCH and no one will because they are gutless wonders who like to crow about their inflated records and individual accomplishments without ever really testing themselves.

CCH and Wirth are doing just fine. In fact, better than fine. Each year under Wirth the team has gotten progressively better. This years team- with a HUGE amount of injuries at the SR starter level- ended up bettering last years record- a team led last year by a three year all state caliber Sr QB. This is a team that had over 30 injuries during the year which resulted in those players missing one to multiple games- some of the season ending variety.

The fact that boys at the Soph level were able to come in at KEY positions and not only perform, but EXCEL, at their positions just proves to me that the development is happening. Not to mention a very talented class of soon to be Soph's who just beat Highlands as Frosh for the first time since 2006. This tells me the CYF feeder league program (which Wirth helped to promote) is bearing fruit as well - so mission accomplished in that category.

So excuse me while I laugh at the notion that Wirth should somehow be worried about his job. You guys are foolish if you don't think losing to HHS eats at Wirth more than anyone, and more than anyone, he wants to win that game. Why the hell do you think he schedules like he does? To prepare for the post season.

Lastly and maybe most importantly, these boys are coached up to be terrific young MEN and leaders of the community- they have their priorities in line. You won't see any taunting after a play, and if you do, you won't see that player in the game anytime soon thereafter.

I for one, can't wait to see these boys strap it on and start hitting again in the spring. I think they will do fantastic if history is an indicator.

From an outsiders perspective, it appears that Highlands seems to have more success developing it's players, as they rise up the ranks. Every year we hear this is CCH's best freshman class, then four years go by and Highlands is still on top. What is the reasoning behind this, I am not sure, but maybe Highlands just takes it to another level in the offseason?

I feel your emotion on this BD. Heck, there is a thread on this topic on Beechwood's coach who has two state championships and is not in the state semifinals for the first time ever as a head coach.

However, I do think there is pressure on Wirth, just like Rash, to get a title in the next couple of years. They both have young talent with the potential to make it happen.

...and I think the talk about the Beechwood coach is just as silly - probably even more so.

Here's the bottom line for me- do I want my son playing for this coach and staff? Yes I do. Some of the people unhappy with the job that Wirth is doing should be careful what they ask for- not sure who else they could get who is willing to coach at a lower pay grade that has made the same type of incremental improvements every year of his tenure.

I can only speak for myself. It's the end of a fine season for the Colonels, but not the end of the world. I drifted off to sleep last night thinking that the Colonels have NOTHING to hang their heads about. Holding the Birds to 0 in the 3rd quarter in itself was a major accomplishment. Not many other foes can say that, if any. Going down to JC last week and taking care of business should keep any Colonel or any Colonel fan pacified for a good while. I had serious doubts about that one and look how that turned out. Certainly they had to go into this game against the Birds with belief or why bother, but in all reality everyone knew (even themselves) that if the Colonels were to pull out a victory here, the odds were stacked high to do so. Losing always hurts, but life goes on and I'm sure when the dust clears they'll get over it and see that it was a very good season after all.

Some exciting round ball is just around the corner. That there should be a shot of a good remedy.

Oh please. Stop With the over dramatic we are above everyone else garbage because you play HHS every year. YOU HAVE TO!! They are in your district!!!!!

Trust me, before putting every other school in the area down because they won't play them, you first have to convince me that CCH would play HHS if they didn't have to. I say they wouldn't. Time to get off your ivory tower and point fingers elsewhere while you act like CCH is going above and beyond by playing a team they have to play in the first place. So please stop calling all the other teams gutless wonders when CCH would be one of those gutless wonders you talk about if they had a choice to. So keep playing 1A teams out of district play and call everyone else gutless.

Take a deep breath and reread Bluedads post. I think you missed his point.

Sometimes it feels as if CCH gets that free pass and have walked around as if they are automaticaally #2 in the area behind HHS. Then I read a post calling everyone else gutless wonders bbecause they don't play Highlands while CCH does as if CCH has a choice in the matter, which they don't.

Thats all I could read so if he aopologized later in his post for sounding arrogant then I didn't get that far, but that is all I could read before responding.

As a CCH guy and a parent of a former player I can tell you that his comment was a)over the line and b)coming from emotion. Dads should have to wait 48 hours before posting after their son's game. I've been there.

You can't hold yourself up for playing HHS when you have to play HHS. Would they still if they didn't have to? I hope so but you don't know.

I agree, and maybe I should of waited until I responded also, just didn't like the way it was presented bby making it sound as if CCH was above every other team in the area because they play HHS as if theey went above and beyond to do so when in fact they have to play them...the calling everyone elsee gutless wonders I couldn't let go.

I do apologize to bluedad and know a lot had to do with emotions, just found it hard to let it go.

CCH played Moeller and didn't have to. I've never known the Colonels in the whole history of their program to turn down a challenge. That's not being overly dramatic... that's just the truth, and no doubt they come away with learning something fundamental about the game and/or life in doing so.

First, my apologies for covering everyone with the "gutless wonders" label. Certainly not everyone- but there are a few and I'll leave it at that. My post was more in reaction to Romans assertion that Wirth and CCH are somehow doing a subpar job and Wirths job is in jeopardy because of the record against HHS.

Next, I'm not going to try and convince you that CCH would continue to play HHS if they weren't in district- I have a feeling you wouldn't agree no matter what. But I would say that everyone associated with CCH football- from the coaches, to the players, to the alumni and athletic boosters- would ABSOLUTELY vote to continue playing Highlands. Why in the world wouldn't they? They played (4) 6A teams, a (5A) team and Moeller this year- playing top competition prepares for the post season.

And last- yes- this year, I am certain CCH was the #2 team in N Ky- not that it matters now.

Good points all around. I think Wirth's job is secure. I think the feeder program is netting some results. As to would they play if they weren't in the same district? I say yes, but with some doubt. The Freshman played and beat Highlands this year. The varsity lost twice. But then wasn't there an issue on here I read about with regards to the jv game?
