I suspect I couldn't place half of the world's nations on a map, but I do know a good bit about most of them. When reading a news story I never reference a map, not sure why.

I admit I'm a bit of a geography guy so it was easy for me, but I would consider Egypt one of the easiest in the world to place. It's location is very distinctive, bordering the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Along with South Africa and Madagascar I would say it's the easiest African country to place.

Fair assumption: the higher the ratio of young people to older people, the poorer the country. Europe, like the United States, has many more old people than Africa or Asia.

I understand that concept but I had no idea the difference between Nigeria and industrialized countries would be THAT vast especially since infant mortality is so high in much of Africa. I guess I assumed if you could make it to adolesence (which many don't), you had a decent chance of surviving well into adulthood.

Not even close. Which is why I get upset when people want to pull back aid to these places in the world.

I did some reading on the subject and some articles attributed the problem to the wars breaking out and genocides who pop up periodically. Also, for years journalists have pointed out that many African government are ripe with corruption and much support being taken by the government and not making it to the people.
