I'm sure the kid is talented and sounds like he should be the favorite. I like Barker and think he's good, but I did kind of expect a little more out of him this year. To be fair, I never did get to see him play and I have no idea what kind of talent he had around him, but I just felt there would be a little more. It also could be all the hype catching up to him. Just like when you go to see what you think is going to be a great movie and you walk out saying it wasn't all that. Well a lot of times it's because you've heard so much about it that you were expecting your seat to explode or something. Maybe I just had unreal expectations since he was touted as Superman! Not just on here but other sites, including UK football sites.

Barker is a great talent but didn't have the tools around him this season that I'm sure even his coach would wish he had. Last year he basically had 1 exceptional player and that was Fogle but it showed Fogle can't do it the entire season. This year Barker had some really nice players like Way and his other WR's but they has too many drops. Double that with the fact they tried to run most of the time that some games it is tough to turn it on at an instant when you have to go to the air, not just Drew but the recievers really have to get into the groove and that is why you see a lot of teams get their best WR's invited early. When they wait they can get cold. They are a fickle bunch lol.

 

I can't wait to see Drew play at UK. I'd love for him to have a stellar career down there and help get UK football back on the map.

I think they should at least make it the state finals.

That's not true in regards to "basically had 1 exceptional player" . Last year they also had Way, McKeehan, Padgett (huge miss from this year IMO). Had a senior-laden OL.

That is true. I didn't mean to say last year they only had 1 good player, it was meant to say they hadd 1 elite player other than Barker and that was Fogle. Padgett and the other seniors deffinatly had a huge impact on the team and the line I have mentioned several times is what was missed this yeear the most. With only 1 returning lineman who started is a tough way to go, Cooper had the same issue this year with their line.

 

In no way ddid i mean to downplay the other players on last years team, just saying that just like Beeechwood with Nussbaum last year, Conner had that type of player in Fogle and this year they didn't

Kuntz and Fant will get a chance to impress at the All-star game in December. Hopefully they become team mates at WKU.

Couldn't you say the same thing about Fant? So much talent around him that it's hard to focus on one thing. If you try to stop him, you get killed elsewhere. Their blocking allows for more time for him to get open. Any argument you make against Houliston can be made for anyone on a dominant team. You don't think every team HHS played wasn't doing everything in their power to stop the passing game. And I guess he didn't actually throw the ball to those guys. Just because a kid behind him is just as good, doesn't mean what Houliston did isn't incredible and should have an asterick beside it because he plays on a good team. Fant plays on, what most think, is the most talented team in the state! Why hate on Houliston and not Fant?

Matt Elam winning a state wide award is a joke. Huge upside, and no doubt has big time potential, but he is not a great high school d lineman. He may not be the best d lineman on his own team.

Awards like this have always been 90% popularity and 10% actual ability imo.

 

Not saying that is what happens all the time, but in a case like Elam this year with all the hype and from the beginning of the season was being reported he was struggling at times just goes to show that a lott of times some of the better players are overlooked because you haven't heard of them.

I'd have to respectfully disagree on your comment that says the Mr. Football award has been 90% popularity and 10% actual ability. Just looking at the last 4 years, the winners were James Quick, Patrick Towles, Lamar Dawson, and Antonio Andrews. I guess people think it's about popularity because usually the BEST players in the state get the most publicity.

Actually a lot of times the best players are not known to a lot of people due to where they play, lack of camps etc. Yes great players have won, but I will never be convinced that the finalist list is made up of the best players in the state. More so the lists are usually made up of the most well known.

That is not to say

hat Fant and Barker aren't the best in the state, but the others that will make the list, Elam for example are there because of the hype going into the season.

Let's be fair to Matt Elam. Nick Saban comes to his house in order to try to CONVINCE him to come to Alabama. He may not be the best player THIS YEAR but let's not not kill the kid as a player.
