Don't get me wrong. Mayfield is really, really good. But in my opinion they couldn't get McCracken off the field right now. Hughes is a different player than he was at beginning of season, with the one really bad pass against Henderson aside. McCracken also played Mayfield without Sayner anchoring defensive line. I would take McCracken by 1 to 2 touchdowns at this point.

 

You may be right. McCracken's 1 advantage over Mayfield is depth. In saying that, that's a lot more relevant in august when temps are in the 90s and it's humid. Mayfield actually dominated McCracken in the 1st half, but, with temperatures as they were, got gassed late in the game and McCracken made a strong comeback. I don't think the humidity in late October would be as much a factor. Granted, McCracken has figured some things out since that early season game and players better know there roles now, but, the Cardinals are better now then they were in week 2, as well. They'd still move the ball and score a lot of points and as good as the Mustangs offense is, I'd still be hard pressed to say they're a better offensive team than Mayfield and I think the Cardinals D would be more likely to get a few stops on McCracken then McCracken would on them. I wouldn't really want to play McCracken again either, but, that's me, not the players and a rematch could go either way, for sure, but, I'd still like the Cards chances.

What happens in the playoffs has nothing to do with these rankings. The rankings are based on body of work to this date and judgments about how good a team is. To use your words' date=' if we rank a team based on "what you've done or not done" then Scott Co. is lacking. When I look at a team's body of work, who they played is almost as important as what their record is. I think Scott Co. got a bit of a pass on their schedule early in the season because of how well they did in the playoffs last year. Once people realized how weak their schedule is, it began to create doubts about how good they truly are. What they have done, is go undefeated against ok teams by wide margins of victory. What they have not done, is play one single team that is a worthy opponent, so I have no idea what happens when they play a worthy opponent. That is where I am. They may be the best team in the state but they haven't beaten one decent team yet to cause me to believe that might be true. Playing strong opponents gives us better insight into how good a team really is and we have no clue in that area on Scott Co., other than they are beating ok teams by big margins. At least Simon Kenton has wins over four ranked teams - Dixie Heights, Collins, Conner and Newport Central Catholic. Now, 3 of those four are in smaller classes but they are good wins. If I could get over Scott Co. annihilating SK twice last year, I would rank SK above Scott Co. The trouble spot in the 6A rankings is Trinity hasn't won enough against the tough schedule. It is great to play a tough schedule but playing those teams isn't enough - you need to get wins. The second issue is everyone in the super district is beating up on each other. That puts losses on the records even if it is against a very good opponent. But the four teams in the super district (T, X, Male and Manual) have one loss to a Kentucky team outside their district - X losing to Bowling Green. They also have lopsided scrimmage wins over two top ten teams (T over Highlands and X over Simon Kenton). Until someone in KY 6A hangs a loss on those teams, or on a team that is close to that quality, then it is hard for me to rank them above those teams.[/quote']

McCracken is being underrated across the board right now. You have a new school and a sophomore QB in Hughes who are both exploding. It will be very, very difficult at this point to beat them in Paducah. And they have home field until the championship game. On the other hand just as most people on here haven't seen McCracken I haven't seen Simon Kenton, Male or Scott Co. My only point is if you are holding the first two losses of the season that were the first games for a new program against them at this point you are doing it wrong. I have also been seeing local people ranking Mayfield ahead of McCracken. At this point I almost guarantee you Mayfield doesn't want that matchup right now.

 

I probably would put McCracken slightly ahead of Mayfield at this point. But you can't argue that when they did play Mayfield won in a very hard fought contest. Mayfield is just a little ole 1A school they are not supposed to even be on the field with the big ole 6A schools. Especially one being talked about for the 6A title.

Hendo is known as a good defensive team, but, there offense hasn't knocked anyones doors off this year. What that game told me more than anything was that McCracken is a very, very good offensive team. I think Mayfields offense is considerable stronger and a lot more balanced than Hendo's, so, I think they'd still manage to score in the 30s, if not more. Now, that still may not be enough to beat the Stangs, but, I'm pretty sure, we'd be right there in the ballgame in crunchtime and who knows what would happen then. If it came down to needing a last ditch FG, I'd like the Cards chances pretty good.

 

I will definitely concede that Mayfield is the best offensive squad McCracken has faced this year. However, give Hendo's running game some credit. They have had some success this year against above average competition.

It would be awesome if Mayfield, Caldwell, Tilghman and McCracken all end up in BG! Caldwell might have the path of least resistance. Central will be tough for PT, even in Paducah. Mayfield has the prospect of a Russelville rematch and Central Hardin, Meade, Butler or Simon Kenton could derail the Mustangs. Of the 4, Caldwell and Mayfield would be prohibitive favorites in the championship.

Just saying Scott County's schedule is so weak we can't be certain how good they are. You may be right. They might be the best team in Kentucky history but how would anyone know it?

So again, Scott County loses in the Title Game in 2011. Loses by 1 point to Trinity in the Semis last year and is undefeated this year. Bringing back the majority of those players. And that is the only losses they have on their schedules in 3 years.........But they cant lay claim to being the best this season so far, seeing that they have continued their trend of winning and other traditional powers have slipped a bit back to the field???? Folks will find out soon enough as the playoffs begin......
