I see the roster depth and platoon approach as the way to go. Cov Cath is always going to have a good amount of talent in the building. Wirth is building a platoon team that will lead to sustainable success year in and year out. I believe the two worst years of the Wirth era will be years one and two, when the Colonels went 6-6. I see CCH separating themself from most of the area teams. Highlands has opened a pretty wide gap between themselves and everyone else. Cov Cath is moving into that gap. They aren't good enough yet to win regularly versus HHS. But they are going to be better than everyone else in N. Ky. on a year in and year out basis. The years of the past where you get a great team followed by a couple average teams, and perhaps even a losing season or two in the mix, and then it repeats itself are not going to happen going forward. So there you go. That is how I see CCH. Fire away.

If you are talking about the program instead of the team itself then that makes your argument even worse. Just the last couple years alone there have been several state titles from NKY teams other than Highlands and I don't think CCH has any of those. Now you are saying any loss CCH has by another NKY team is a fluke. No wonder you can say what you say because anytime another team is better you just say it doesn't count.

The W/L record is not how I would judge teams especially with the recent trend of scheduling for CCH. Part of it is simply out of their control ie playing bad 4A teams. Part of it is programs not being as strong as they once were ie BW/Boone/Ryle. The "why" is irrelevant.

 

We can't say "don't look at the # of championships because HHS is so good" and then say "look at the W/L record."

 

CCH is in a nice position. I just can't say this is as strong as the program has been.

What I think and maybe what VOR was trying to say is CCH has been one of the most consistent teams in the area. I can agree with that.

 

They are usually in the top 5 in NKY but that is far from being the best team after HHS year in and year out. Other teams may not be as consistent as CCH every year but their are other teams in NKY besides HHS that have been better than CCH in the last few years. Last year there were a couple better IMO than CCH for instance.

CovCath has been good enough to win a state championship several times in the last 17 years had it not been for Highhlands. Look no further than last year when they lost in a regional final to H. A semi-final against LexCath at home would have been a battle, but one that CovCath certainly may have won. Both of those teams would have been a favorite over Collins.

 

A championship here, a championship there and you have what we call a perennial power. I think some folks are awfully quick to criticize when a team drops just below one of the states best teams that happen to be in its class. CovCath and X are the two most often cited. Just yesterday I saw someone comment that Boyle had fallen off. What's it been, two years since they won state. Undefeated after 7 games this year. How many teams would call that a falloff?

 

So CovCath's biggest problem in my mind is that they happen to be in a class with a team that has enjoyed unprecedented success.

 

That being said, I am befuddled by a four game jv season along with two cancellations vs Highlands. To me there is so much to be gained by playing your rival in jv games.

Why did CovCath cancel Highlands not once but twice? Is NKY biggest rivalry over?

Actually there are very few schools that you could say that about. Certainly over the last six plus years its been nothing but playing for second best for everyone in that class.

The 90s were better if we're using a relative measure. Early to mid-2000s with exception of 2003 were strong.

 

I didn't say the program wasn't in good standing. They're in solid position. I do have questions about depth if we can't play JV games though. They're simply not "clearly better" as you said. That's my issue with your statement.
