Why was Bowling Green passing up 49-3 and up 56-3 in the first place?

 

Why were they passing up 77-3 in the 4th Quarter is even more of a question?

 

I am not saying a blowout of epic proportions couldnt have been avoided and certainly 2 Defensive TD's helped make the margin what it is... but in a game where it was very clear Logan County didn't deserve to be on a field 3 passing TD's with the clock running is a bit excessive.

 

 

I understand how that may look but I have never had a problem with a team running its offense. In the 4th quarter it is my understanding it was freshmen on the field and I don't have problem with them passing the ball at all. The box score also doesn't tell us if it was a vertical pass or a screen pass. Fant, Tisdale and Pillow and quite a few others are all capable of turning a screen pass into an 80 yard td reception.

This comment will lead to the usual comments that middle school football doesnt matter blah blah blah but......

 

Bowling Green MS team has been Regional Champs in 8th grade and in the state semifinals the last 4 years, just an FYI.

The fact BG was throwing with the running clock in tact with their starters is a bit off putting though. I know the excuse is "Gotta get the reps in", but in a game where even your Freshmen can essentially blow your opponent out when you are passing up 40+ points is a bit, well, unnecessary and I don't think the reps you get are valuable at all. There are several coaches who would not have had their starters in as soon as the clock began to run.. that is Wallace's call and I can't take offense to it if he wanted to get his guys a few more snaps while he had the chance.. but there are certainly other aspects of a game you can try to work on that point like your ball control offense when you are up 2 TD's and looking to milk clock.

I also don't have a problem with them playing as hard as they can or getting their reps in during the first half. It becomes excessive and unnecessary to me if the starters are playing in the second half in a game of this fashion. Once the backups take over the game I don't have a problem with them continuing to play football and getting their reps in as well.

I knew and predicted that the score would, of course, be waaaaay lopsided. I didn't see this many points being scored though, simply because I knew BG's young kids would be in quick and their even younger kids would close the game out. I just didn't realize BG's younger kids would be that much better than Logan Co's kids. Hey, if there is a 9th grader who almost never see's the field who see's a chance to get to the end zone, or gets a change to blow somebody out of his cleats, you better believe they are gonna do it, and should be expected to, no matter what the score.

Give me a break. If Trinity beat someone by this margin the wolves would be howling! I am certain Jason Frakes is very proud, very proud indeed.

 

Why are you bringing me into this? Yeah, I went to BG ... and I cringed when I saw the score. I also know the players involved and don't believe there was any malicious intent.

 

The instant outrage and judgment on this board when something like this happens is embarrassing.

Yes... decrease the playbook down to 2 or 3 plays max.. run them over and over.

 

I still like the idea of working on a game situation such as playing keep away and trying to run the clock out by moving the chains. Have your QB milk the playclock to the last second..RB's stay in the middle of the field or in bounds (doesnt matter with running clock, but it is practice).

 

Just from watching Belfry over the years a true 12+ play drive with a running clock in tact can eat essentially an entire quarter by itself if you are keeping it on the ground and milking the playclock.

Seriuosly? Deep throws, reverses, why not a half back pass, ......if you are up by that much, or know you are about to be, line up and run the ball........everyone plays hard, if you score, you score, but passing when up by 60...........even a screen seems a bit out of line.

 

To answer the question........YES, there is a middle ground.

From reading elsewhere, the problem in Logan County is that they are not allowed to run a middle school program by the administrators there. Logan County was consolidated from 5 high schools, none of which played football, and all still exist as K-8 schools. Apparently they're concerned about affecting the identity of the individual schools. It makes them terribly unprepared when they hit the high school level.

 

Just curious, do you know what the 5 high schools were and how long ago they merged. It's always been Logan Co. as long as I can remember. Seems like maybe it's time to move on with the localized mentality.

 

I do remember when the 7 Muhlenburgh Co. high schools merged to form 2 schools. This was around 1994 I think. I I remember right one school started a football program but dropped it after a couple of years, and it wasn't until those schools merged again a few years ago that football was brought back. Starting a football program from scratch is not an easy task.

It would seem that playing your regular offense until half is reasonable. Seems to be what they did.

 

The playing your 2nd string and JV and freshmen would be expected. Seems to be what they did. When those squads are in you do not hold them back. Its they chance to get in and really play some varsity.

 

If the 56 yard 4th quarter pass is from Hayes to Fant that would be an eye catcher. But its Gott to Wilson.

 

Net is BG eased the dogs in 2Q and called them off it seems in the 2nd half. Seems reasonable. Long passes by the lower echelon squads should not be an issue.
