The fact that someone on BGP is actually defending these parents is just as alarming as these parents complaining about this.

The kids were right to bring this to the attention of their parents. The parents were right to bring this to the attention of the principal. The principal's solution, however, was a little shaky. But wait. There's a rainbow in the Arizona desert. The school has now invited the officer to a special assembly to talk about what police officers do for the community -- a "teachable moment." Don't you love it when we have happy endings?

Come on. You honestly think this guy was dressed like this? Really?

Boy, I sure felt like dressing that way a few times when I was room mother for my daughters's kindergarten class. Needed combat pay.

From a news story: "James Holmes (the Colorado movie-theater mass-murderer) was arrested outside the theater near his car, dressed in head to toe body armor and wearing a police-style helmet."

Your turn.

SWAT Officers don't walk around in full body armor and a helmet unless they are in a tactical situation. In fact at most departments SWAT officers are just regular patrolmen with extra training and SWAT equipment issued to them...I'll guarantee you that this guy was not in full tactical gear but a regular uniform.

Another one I was way wrong on.

I think I might get upset if someone dressed like this was walking toward my kid's school.

You have got to be kidding me. How many times in your life have you seen cops walking around dressed like that when they weren't involved in situation that called for it. Of course he wasn't dressed like that.

TwotoPlace...I don't see your location listed. Are you from Arizona?

I would have talked to the parent/policeman about being a part of the school safety plan. Random appearances by uniformed officers can be a deterrant to criminals.

It's sad that the "teachable moment" needs to be with the ADULTS!

I'm agreeing with a Buckeye fan. I need a shower.

Figure of speech, my daughter called me a room mother and she was too stubborn to argue with. :D

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: I know many who view Buckeye football fans in a similar light as to how I view UK basketball fans. But I also know there are a few of us out there (on both sides) that still try to approach things logically. We're not all crazies.

Of course the uniform is important. If the officer was dressed in a swat uniform that did not resemble a typical police officer's uniform, then I can see why some parents might get upset. ("Whoa! Who is that armed guy walking up to our school dressed like that?!") However, if the officer was dressed in something approaching a standard uniform, then I agree with the majority view. Another example of shoddy Fox reporting seeking to sensationalize an incident, rather than inform the viewer.

It is irrelevant . He is a police officer. If he is wearing his uniform he can wear it where ever he wants. I remeber being an orderly back in college at a Hospital and cops came in all time off duty or on duty with firearm on their side. No reasonable person freaks out over a police officer in uniform and with a gun.

No one is blaming the students. If they were scared they should speak up. The problem lies with the parents and principal who passed up a teaching oppurtunity. Instead it was just to easy to cave to more PC Oscar Mayer Bologna that is ruining this country.

More to this story than is being reported. The image of armed police officers in uniform at schools is common. Or should be. So why would this seemingly innocent incident startle anyone? I agree. He is a police officer and can wear his standard uniform wherever he wants. I went to the library the other day and was not at all uncomfortable by the fact that a uniformed officer was sitting at a desk. So what happened at the school the morning the officer dropped off his daughter? There's more to this story, one would think.
