That's probably about where I think everyone is for now.

 

 

From what I saw of Conner last Friday night they could be a pretty good team but I think their lack of a true RB hurts them a lot. All the defense has to do is keep their eye on Barker(which is not easy, because he rather athletic and has great size) and apply pressure up front. Right now Barker passing and Barker are really the only threats from Conner. With that said it's still going to be extremely hard for a lot of teams to hold Conner under 40 points in a game. If they could establish a running game though, watch out!

True but how do they fare amongst the best in the state? Big win over Harlan County but a majority don't believe in the 5A class as a whole. I'd be shocked if anyone has more than two 5A teams in their top 15.

 

Belfry has been playing at a very high level regardless of class for a couple years now. People forget that Central was a consensus Top 10 team in KY regardless of class the past two years, beating many good 6A Teams.. and Belfry has been stride for stride with them.

 

I noticed you had Caldwell County ahead of Belfry... Caldwell has done nothing to warrant being in that company IMHO. The difference between 2A and 3A last year was vast. 3A may very well have the strongest Top 5 pound for pound in the State.

For me, it's more that they won at Harlan County, which is no easy place to play. That, coupled with the fact that Belfry wasn't supposed to be this good this early makes me think they'll be a load once things really get rolling.

 

The way they play ball control, they keep the opposing team's offense off of the field and shorten the game.

 

Phillip Haywood is a great coach whose proven his worth as well.

 

Because they weren't expected to be this good this early is why I have them lower.

Caldwell County is benefitting from their reputation of being better than last year's team. Aren't they all juniors this season? If so, they'll benefit again next season. I haven't seen Caldwell County or Belfry play this season. So far Caldwell County is backing up the hype. Belfry's people are shocked they are as good as they are. Based on that I can't have Belfry higher than Caldwell County. Yet. I have seen Harlan County play so I know what Belfry was up against.

Yes...

 

In terms of quality and parity, per school of size, I would take the resume collectively of 3A over any other class. This is not saying the Top 5 in 3A would beat the Top 5 in 6A heads up..it is simply saying that for the size if the schools playing in the classification o how competitive they are, it is possibly the best.

 

1A has the King of Pound for Pound teams in Mayfield..but then there is a very large drop off to beechwood.. then another very large drop off the other teams.

 

2A has parity 1-3 (NewCath, Caldwell, Desales) and then a drop to 4 and 5 and the rest of the class.

 

3A has a Central program who has been on par with a Top 5 6A teams (not named Trinity) for years, a Belfry team who has been hot on their heels and has proven they can knock off larger schools, a Wayne County team who gave Central all they wanted a returned 9 starters each way, a South Warren team who is probably one of the 5 best teams West of I-65, and a Bourbon County team that returns 9 starters off a Semi-Finalist team.

 

4A has parody in teams 2-5, but the drop from Highlands is staggering and to be blunt the second tier 4A teams have struggled when they have stepped out to play "better" teams over the years.

 

5A's issues are well documented, in fact this is a class the 3A Top 5 would fare very well playing the straight up. Bowling Green then a world away to everyone else.

 

6A is parody by subtraction. Trinity and X are not the dominant powerhouses they were a few years back, Scott County has emerged as the clear team to join them, but #4 and #5 are a bit of a mystery.

 

Basically:

 

The 1A Top 5 would be competitive against 2A's Top 5, but would struggle mightily beyond that

 

The 2A Top 5 would struggle mightily against the 3A and above, yet would have an edge on 1A

 

The 3A Top 5 would have a decisive edge over 1A and 2A, would go straight up against 5A (except BG), would be competitive with everyone not named Highlands in 4A, and would surprisingly put up an admirable fight against the 4 and 5 6A teams (while being rocked by the top 3)

 

4A would go straight up with 5A and be better, but have the same fate as 3A against 6A with the exception of their bell cow Highlands (who would still get rocked potentially)

 

...and so on and so forth....
