What currently active coach has been at the same school the longest?

 

and...

 

What currently active coach has been coaching the longest overall?

Dave Faust has been at St Henry for a long stretch.

Starting on four pages and I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Coach Chris O'Hearn of Mason County. He has been Coach for nine seasons and has a record of 212-76 and has won 75% of his games. Has won seven Districts, four Regions, two Regional Runner-up and oh yeah a State Championship. Has coached a Mr. Basketball, two NAIA National championship player (Setty & Middleton) and a NCAA Championship player (Miller). Also, several other College players and three pretty good Football players (Tolle, Pawsat and Harris). Mason was very lucky to replaced Kelly Wells with Chris O'Hearn. I am very happy with his success.

After a bit of research it appears that Coach and Athletic Director Mr. Gene Morrison of Covington Latin is entering his 31st season as head coach of the Trojans. He's been at Latin 36 years and took over head coaching duties after Fr. Ed Heile retired. This may satisfy both questions. As well his longevity of coaching basketball, he has also coached baseball, track, tennis, golf and cross country at Covington Latin.

 

A man for all seasons and perhaps a track record that's hard to top.

While I agree, O Hearn should be mentioned in any list of good coaches, I think what I bolded from your post is likely why more people haven't mentioned him. I think most people figure anyone who has coached that type of talent should win and win a lot. I.E. anyone could have won a lot of games at Mason County with those players.

 

Personally, I totally disagree with that line of thinking. It's not his fault he's coached really good players, so it shouldn't be held against him. He's won at a great rate with those players, while playing a very difficult schedule every year. Personally, I'd put the Mason staff right up there with anyone in the state, but I think many overlook what a good job the coaches do because of the talent that has come through in the last 10 or so years.

Mason has has decent talent but if this then Billy Hicks should never be considered and his name appears all over this thread.

Billy Hicks is one of the winningest coaches in Kentucky history. He has to be mentioned. And when you look at all of the schools he has been at it only increases his resume. The one person who said O'Hearn should win with the talent he has had said he didn't agree with that line of thinking so there is no point defending that logic.

 

 

Wins are wins.

True story. Hicks was rather successful at Evarts and Corbin before he came to Scott County. He didn't exactly pull a Lane Kiffin and fail upward into jobs, especially the Scott County one.

Didn't O'Hearn have some success at Nicholas County back in the 90s?

Yes he won the Class A Region in 1995 with Nicholas County. He is one of the best without question.

I was in process of updating my records with the Gene Morrison/Covington Latin info...when I found that while the KHSAA did list Coach Morrison's first year as 1983, it also said that Jeff Carie was the Latin basketball coach in 1996; David Gastright in '97 and '98; Bill Westerman in '99-2001; and the three years after that there was an abbreviated schedule with no appearance in the post-season tourney.

I honor the man for his commitment to Latin High School and his coaching in so many different sports, but thought a little more detail might be helpful.

As far as Chris O'Hearn and his days at Nicholas County, I don't have the Bluejackets' final records those three seasons (1993-1995,) but they were not able to win anything in the 37th district tournaments. Ousted the first year by a 6-23 Bourbon County team; by a very good Harrison County team in '94; and by Paris in '95.

 

As far as his time at Mason County...now that's a whole different story.

Funny how when you get to a school with better players and more tradition you have better results. My mentor always told me from day one "It is a lot more about what gets off the bus than it is about us" I had my best results at a school with good talent and great tradition about 15 years ago, but I feel now I am a MUCH better coach than I was then, but with less talent and much less tradition where I am at and have been. Same type thing, O Hearn seems better at Mason, Hicks seems better at SC etc... Just the way the coaching world works.
